7th Sea Adventures at the monthly Big Meet

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Hello,

I've not been to a Big Meet before, and I've not run an adventure for a while now. I'm thinking of putting both right by offering something for the November meet. If there's interest, of course.

For those who don't know, 7th Sea is set in 1688 in a kind of parallel world to our own (or least to our Europe), but with added sorcery, ancient artefacts from vanished civilisations, fey/goodly folk and other stuff. Many of the main European countries appear in the game, generally reflecting the most interesting parts of their history. For example, 'Avalon', where the adventure will be set, is a combination of the renaissance England of Elizabeth I and the mythic fairytale England of King Arthur. More on the game courtesy of wiki.

Compared to D&D (at least, the versions I know), 7th Sea:

  • Is much simpler to play and easy to pick up on the day.
  • Has no formal character classes/professions, so characters are much less specialised
  • Is designed to encourage and reward swashbuckling, risk-taking, heroism, derring-do, ballsy-but-ill-advised-manoeuvres, and doing what's cool and fun and epic rather than what gives you the optimum chance of success
  • Is relatively low-magic
  • Is essentially "Three Musketeers: The Roleplaying Game" in tone and style
  • Has a fairly simple combat system and therefore only limited tactical options
  • Is at its best in non-combat situations (IMO)
  • Isn't a spoof, pastiche, or parody, but, like the Musketeer and other swashbuckler films, doesn't take itself too seriously.

The adventure I have in mind is mainly an open-ended investigation/mystery, with a lot of options and freedom of approach for the players. I'd like players to play their characters as characters, not as collections of stats. There will be combat encounters (depending on PC decisions), but if you prefer games where any investigation/mystery/talky bits is just a prelude to dungeons/ lots of combat encounters this probably isn't the adventure for you.

I'm posting this now to gauge interest. It's not a mainstream system (not having 'Dungeon' or 'Dragon' in the title...) and I know some people are particular about what they want to play or may already have plans for the meet. I'm planning to run this with pre-generated characters for those who are new to the system (though pre-genned to order, where possible, to fit a concept/role you'd like to play), and old hands may be able to make their own (again, with agreed concept/role). Ideally, I'd like to have characters created and discussed in advance with as many of the players as possible - I want you to have a character you want to play.

The scenario....

Autumn 1668, Carleon, glorious capital of Avalon. It is rumoured that Good Queen Elaine may finally rule within months on the long running legal case between the noble families of de Woodeville and de Beaumont. The bitter dispute is over the right to inherit the Earldom of Haverford in the county of Camlann after the death of Earl Richard Jarndyce, the last of his line. Representatives of both families rush to Queen Elaine's court, eager to make an impression and to press their claims. While the de Beaumonts dispatch no lesser person than the family patriarch, Earl William, the de Woodeville family boldly decide to send only young Edward, second son and likely heir to Haverford should the judgement go in their favour, and his entourage.

7th Sea has been on my 'really want to try' list for ages so I really hope you run this. Certainly if it were not for the whole being in a different country thing really impeding my attendance to the big meets I would for sure jump on this.

Non-dnd type stuff is just fine at the big meets - you shouldn't struggle to get players but you might just have to take that on good faith if there is not a lot of chatter online before hand. Certainly as attendance rises (tends to happen during the winter months) there is an increasing chance of players being there looking for something to do with themselves. And if you happen to show p ready to run a game and it doesn't happen please don't let that discourage you from offering it again, or something else at a future meet. Its just one of those things that happens once in a while, nothing more.

Awesome news!!

The way we are tending to work at the minute with unpredicatble numbers is many GMs put games up on the calender and then we see which will be playing on the day.

I will bring with me 4th Ed DnD - Seekers of the Ashen Crown and I believe Ben is bringing DeathWatch if anyone fancies being a space marine!

7th Sea!!!

Awesome, would love to play even if it is a one off!
Might Try and scam someone into watching the shop while I run off to play some of my fav games :-D

Adam,

The plan was for me to bring the "Red Dragon Inn" board-game for the Afternoon Session, but if you can come (I guess both of us will be in Ian's motor) and run the game, I would be happy to join as a player if you are running low. I could entrust my board-game to another responsible adult (yeah there should be some! wink)

"Hollow's Chronicles" will be on for the evening for the regulars and whoever wants to join.

I will organise the Big Meet TikiWiki pages and thread "soon", you will be invited to repost there, or point to this post when that happens.

For those who do not know Adam, he is a steadfast player in "Rise of the Runelords", currently leading the party as a freshly knighted Knight Banneret... (glib LV10 Thieves/Safety Officers then to get titles you see).

Laurent,

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Coolbeans - thanks everyone.

I've obviously overestimated the amount of advance planning re games at the monthly meet, so I'll just write an adventure, bring some pre-generated characters, and see what happens. If we've already got lots of games, that's great, if not, I can run some 7th Sea. I hadn't thought as far as getting there (except something about trains), but if Ian (or anyone) is driving, a lift would be marvellous.

Briefly, some archetypes/character roles I have in mind... possibly reserveable in advance...

Nobles:
Edward de Woodeville - party leader and all round dashing hero
One or two more other nobles - Edward's wife/fiancée, a sibling/cousin or best friend. One "glamoured" (i.e. a magic user)

Commoners:
Finn - officially a steward in the de W's city residence, but de facto family spymaster/security
Fillipe - Castillian or Vodacce (Spanish or Italian) fencing master and aged family retainer
Kurt - Eisen (i.e. German) mercenary bodygyard
Possibly one other bodyguard

Possibly one more magicky type - I need to check what's available at what level.....

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Hey, if this one goes ahead, I might "bags" Fillipe.
It sounds like it could be fun. - and fun is what its all about.

'course if Fillipe goes to someone else, then Kurt also sounds like he could be a hoot. 'The war' will not have happened, so none of your 4 - 2 chants.

I'm happy to have a go at most things, despite the fact that all I usually run is D&D.

Len

its on my list of stuff to try

hope i can make this date

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Excellent. I better finish writing it, then. :-)

I said Eisen was Germany, but it's perhaps more Holy Roman Empire than Germany, with a twist of Austria Hungary. "The war" hasn't happened, but a war has... one a lot like the thirty years war in our world, and fought between rival religions factions (the Vaticine and the Objectionists). As a result, Eisen is mostly a Gothic horror style ruined wasteland (complete with monsters) having fought itself to exhaustion. Skilled mercenaries are thus a net export. Babysitting a nobleman in the glorious city of Carleon is probably dull compared to what Kurt has seen and done before, but right now, dull, soft, comfortable, safe and well paid is probably very appealing.

Fillipe needs a much longer name of at least four parts, possibly five. I'm thinking someone like Anthony Hopkins in 'the Mask of Zorro', but less Welsh. If he's from Castille, he could be a refugee from the Vaticine Inquisition (Who no one expects, naturally...), and perhaps even a former associate of El Vago (Zorro) himself. Probably Castille is a better fit than Vodacce, which is more of a renaissance Italy merchant prince politicky backstabby kind of place. Fillipe probably has some kind of debt of honour to the family, and is something of an uncle/mentor to young Edward...

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Adam,

With John possibly showing up this could indeed be a great game. And a hello to the old "JRR_Talking" in passing.smile

Laurent,

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

We've now got a page for the game (basically the stuff from my posts above), and a meet page/thread. I'll provisionally pencil in Fillipe for Len, and if anyone else wants a particular character (or has another idea for one), let me know.

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Adam,

Yes, I knew I had forgotten something when setting up the Big Meet pages and links last night. I should have told you about the "7th Sea" game page. I was about to offer to update it for you but I have realised that you can do it yourself, which is obviously better.

If you can change a page, you should be able to upload a picture if you want to for the game page. PM me if you need help.

Laurent,

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Right then.... I've added a bit more detail to the game page, with a bit more about some of the pre-generated character roles. Some have been provisionally reserved, others are up for grabs, and if there's not one there that takes your fancy, or you've got another idea, just let me know and I'll see if I can change things around. Subject to party balance and the adventure I have planned, I'm fairly flexible.

Oooh, this looks very cool indeed :-)
If there's a place for me, I'd love to play this - (probably Annabel if she isn't already taken?):)

Either way, it'll be lovely to make a big meetup again!

M :-)

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Good to see you eventually sign in Milly. cool It will be good to see you at the big meet again.

Lets hope Annabel and Fillipe are on the same side. eek

Len

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Excellent. I've reserved Annabel for you, Milly.

Fillipe would have taught Annabel to fence, and probably tacitly encourages her tearaway tomboy tendencies.... Perhaps she reminds him of someone he knew once, years ago, far away....

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Adam,

Edward.

As I told you on Friday, I am willing to volunteer to play Edward de Woodeville.

Someone has to do it I guess. In a way, I am cheating as I guess Edward CANNOT POSSIBLY DIE without nixing the adventure. cool

Formatting.

Adam, a formatting trick: There is no need to include the full URL of the game page, if it is a game page TikiWiki has internal links, you may type (7th Sea Adventures|DescriptiveTextToAppearInPost) with doubled ( and ), instead of [http://www.eastmidlandsroleplayers.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=7th+Sea+Adventures|DescriptiveTextToAppearInPost]
I have doubled the [ for them to appear as text.

Laurent,

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

Like this:

((pagename|text that actually appears))

Brought to you by the power of the 'no wiki processing' tags biggrin

~np~ wiki text you don't want to behave like wiki text ~/np~

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Alan,

I knew there must have been something simpler like the 'no processing' command. Now I know for sure.

Being an engineer, it was my duty to find the most complicated and convoluted way to achieve the above result. cool

Laurent,

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

I like my way of formatting. It creates a link which loads up another page when you click on it. Awesome. Isn't the interweb brilliant?

Laurent, I don't know if you're familiar with the phrase "heir and a spare". Well, Edward is the heir, but there is also a spare.... just in case of.... accidents.....

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Right then.... now we're closer to the day, does anyone else want to stake an early claim for any particular character, or have a different idea for a character? The game page has the full list.

Some logistical stuff:

1. Does anyone have any hex/grid mats and miniatures I could borrow (and scribble on)? While it's certainly not essential for 7th Sea (which has little tactical movement) it can be useful to keep track of encounters. It would be good to have a miniature for each character plus some for the bad guys. It doesn't matter if they look like what they represent or not.

2. I sometimes use a little bit of mood music. Presumably that's not a good idea when there's other games going on?

3. Could everyone bring some D10s? This is the only dice you'll need for 7th sea. Ideally 10 D10s if you have them, but 7 will do. It's a roll and keep system (roll a number of dice = attribute + skill, keep the number = attribute).

4. There's a fairly good (and short) review of 7th Sea at rpg.net which also explains some of the game mechanics and background. It's let down only by a lamentable knowledge of English history. Another at
sfsite. Both worth a read if you have time.....
