November 2010 Big Meet

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Dear Member,

This is the discussion thread for our November 2010 Big Meet.

Obviously, you need to have a look at:

The November Social

The Afternoon Session

The Evening Session

You are:

  • A player.

Discuss the games on offer, what you need to prepare, anything really.

  • A GM.

Describe the game you want to play here in addition to what is to be found on your game page.
Ask for advice on how to format your game page.
Ask the Organising Team member in charge of the event to put your game on the sign up page and linkify everything that needs be linkified, such as a particular game thread in the forum or your game page for instance. Members of the Organising Team should be able to modify the calendar event and tracker pages to include their own games, but I can do it for them too if need be.

  • A new member or a simple observer.

We do not bite, so post away.

And for all of the above, you can discuss transport issues here too.

This is the original post, people are invited to propose games as soon as possible to allow players some choice and time to make up their minds.

Hint: "No game, thus no play makes us pretty dull boys" (and girls), so do not be shy and run something!

Yes, I know, I am lazy and merely change the name of the month, but hey, a thread must start with a post after all. wink

Laurent,

Thanks Laurent. I shall, as always, bring along the Deathmatch kit to run if it is wanted. This is a simple 1st level 4e game where you are not a party.

  • You are alone against everyone else.
  • Kill and/or be killed.
  • If you die, you re-spawn after missing a round.
  • Die you lose a point, kill, you gain a point.
  • Play is for a set time (usually 30 minute sessions)
  • 1 session is a day as far as powers etc are concerned.
  • 1 life is an encounter.
  • pre-gens available.

I will also bring my little box of various card and board games. Again, just as I almost always do.

Len

Dear Members,

There are already some talks about a 7th Sea Adventures game being proposed. You may carry on the discussion there or over here.

Seekers of the Ashen Crown seems to also be on offer.

This is only about RPGs!

Board-games will also be on offer. I will set-up some Wiki Pages for them soon enough. Ben is likely going to bring a game called DeathWatch, and even if I play in another game, I may bring Red Dragon Inn.

Nottingham car pooling: Due to unfriendly work shift patterns the car I could have come in will not be available, so it is back to the rail option.

Others are encouraged to discuss their travel arrangements here.

See you at the November 2010 Big Meet.

Len,

Can't you just wait for my post before sneaking yours in? biggrin

Anyway, another game to add then if Deathmatch is again on offer.
I need to copy/paste from the original "event" scripts first since we may have more than two games this time to advertise - I stupidly shortened the event scripts two months ago. neutral

Would anyone from Leicester be organising a car share to this?

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Always.coollol

Leicester Taxi #1 is me.

Dear Big Meet attendees,

So, shall we add more games on the sign-up sheet?

"DeathWatch" has been mentioned, is it this DeathWatch?

What about boardgames?

As mentioned I could bring Red Draon Inn if people are interested.

Again, if you are planning to come, please add you name to the attendance list, even if you do not feel like signing-up to a particular game.

Dear Natalie,

In reply to your message below:

The "Monthly Big Meet" is indeed monthly. It is always set for the second Saturday of the month, or at least has always been for as far as I can remember.

Event posting, "Monthly Big Meet" forum thread, and game organisation efforts usually start after the current month's Big Meet has taken place. So you can safely expect the December Big Meet event to appear on the calendar sometimes early next week.

Laurent,

Hi Laurent,

Just had a quick look through the thread for the November social/meetup, which is something that I'd really be interested in going to, I'm just unfortunately running around in a field dressed as a elf doing live action roleplay that weekend!

Are there plans for a December social/meetup or failing that one in the New Year?

Natalie

Jakoby posts: 16 United Kingdom

Thanks Laurent, I'll keep an eye out for info :-)

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

LARPer alert. biggrin

'Running around a field, dressed as an elf', is considered a reasonable excuse for not being able to attend the big meet. Sadly, I have used the excuse myself. eek (Attendance is not actually mandatory, just a good idea.)

Several of our members and even some of the Admin Team are LARPers.

oooo, I have heard of Eventyr - although when I looked it up and looked at the rules it seemed far too much like DnD for my liking.

The systems I play are awesome because they're very different to DnD ie. you don't have a class.

Have heard good things about it though, may monster at some point. Everyone should LARP, it's like tabletop - but for real :-)

Practically a complete noob when it comes to tabletop roleplaying games. Would this be my best bet to trying some out?

You will probably not get a better chance to try things out. You do not need to bring anything with you people are happy to share their supplies with you. As we are in a pub money is advisable, but prices are reasonable and the food is very very good.

There are always more games than needed, but this just means that there is a good choice and then the games that people want to play get played.

See you tomorrow,

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Natalie, perhaps it is because Eventyr feels so much like DnD that I fell into LARP. At one point my opinion was that LARPing is taking it too far. Thanks to Jason, and a few others, my opinion changed absolutely.

As for "Everyone should LARP", well everyone would be well advised not to discount the possibility of it being tremendous fun. biggrin Everyone should try it out and see how much fun it is. We can always use keen monsters who are young enough to run around like mad things and take a beating. I have reached the point where I can NPC character roles, but the running around, and the taking a beating parts I have to leave to others.

Dear Members,

I believe it is my duty to defend this site from evil LARPers.

These people are dangerous, as stated by TSR's code of Ethics from "back in the days".

This code, originally designed to keep the oh-so-easy-to-pervert American gamer from coming to harm, precisely stated:

18: LIVE ACTION ROLE-PLAYING

''It is TSR policy to not support any live action role-playing game system,
no matter how nonviolent the style of gaming is said to be. TSR
recognizes the physical dangers of live action role-playing that promotes
its participants to do more than simply imagine in their minds what their
characters are doing, and does not wish any game to be harmful.''

LARPers are known to sacrifice their first-born to demonic forces for "fun" or "roleplaying". They do so with plastic foam or rubbery sword implements, which makes it a crime even more heinous and painful than using a standard, well sharpened, kitchen knife as was the case for D&D back in the 80s.

Laurent,

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Well, its nice of you to point out that TSR have been using AOL almost as long as I have. confused

However, if my memory serves me well, part of the floor in your little kobold infested dungeon was slippery with blood and gore at one point, causing a PC to lose his footing, and the slavers were doing just fine. That is rules 8, 12 & 13 flouted.

Also: If you read that lot aloud into an electronic sound recording device and play it backwards, it is complete rubbish, proving beyond doubt it's the work of the devil.

Dear all,

I have enjoyed the Big Meet on Saturday, even if I did not run The Hollow's Chronicles in the end. If the 7th Sea Adventures game was great the fact that the upstairs of the pub was like the inside of a fridge was less so.
The latter was a major motivation to call off my game - I had had a busy week at work and was pretty tired too.

Leaving relatively early allowed Adam and I to catch a train, an actual train not a "bus replacement service", back to Nott'm.

It was nice to see the old gang. Despite all the encouragement, I have successfully managed not to enter into the 4e discussion. mrgreen
Good sparring from Andrew and Adam though! wink

Paul
I know you are looking for a D&D/Pathfinder RPG game in Nottingham but right now the two games I am running are full. The other Pathfinder RPG games being run at Vague Connections that I know of are also likely full.
Andrew and I mentioned an EMRPGG member called Greg, I think it is this member. He played with us once in my River into Darkness game. As mentioned to you, it is highly likely that he now plays, or run games, at the Nottingham Trent University RPG society. You may try to contact him. He seemed to be a lot into Pathfinder RPG at the time.
If you wanted to run a game at Vague Connections, talk to Andrew for a gaming table and some help with finding players. I could help you with setting-up the event, game pages and game thread on the website of course.

I will set-up the December Big Meet calendar event and thread later this week.

Laurent,

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

I thoroughly enjoyed the game too, but as you mentioned, it was a case of not taking my jacket off. I had thought it was just me. But since you were also cold, it must have been the temperature at fault, not my frail body.lol

Thanks for sorting the December event for us Laurent. You know I appreciate it, and I think most of us do too.

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Dear Members,

The December Big Meet calendar events and thread are now open.

This thread shall remain opened for comments until the close of the December Big Meet.
I have now locked the October 2010 Big Meet thread to keep things tidy.

Laurent,
