Librarians

The librarians are an ancient guild who constantly “tweak” the world around them in an attempt to improve all aspects of society. Their belief is that by maintaining the balance of the world, they are creating the ideal conditions for its progress. Much the same way that for a plant to grow well it needs sunlight, water and a good fertile soil, society also has certain factors that will aid its growth. These conditions are loosely based around the following three factors:

Drive:

If society isn’t driven it will rarely achieve its full potential and often fail to progress. Some common drives include; security, power, greed, fame, glory, fulfilling ones potential and aiding others. It is the belief of the librarians that drives are set at birth and thus, the maximum number of avenues for using this drive should be available. This is only possible with a balance between good and evil, a greedy person would struggle if they were good aligned, just as someone who wishes to help others would struggle if they were evil.

Natural Ability:

Just as drive is set at birth, as are natural abilities. It is important to understand your strengths in order to fulfil your potential. The librarians are excellent talent spotters and the often support the local guilds by suggesting people to recruit or by hinting at people who enter the library looking for a book or some information. This is usually done in such a way so as not to reveal the presence of secret guild, and while
it may seem odd that a group of people who work in a library would have such interests, that is the way it has always been, so people don’t ask too many questions.

Direction:

Building upon the two previous factors, this is probably the most important concept and where much of the librarians work is focused. An example of their involvement was given earlier, where they help to recruit people for local guilds. The reason for them doing this is because they have decided that the guild will be the perfect direction for that individual to go, so that their drive and natural ability are used to their fullest, and
allowing them to achieve their potential. The librarians also play a role in the direction of society also, by trying to maintain the balance of law and chaos.

Once again there is a strong focus on the balance of each to provide direction for the masses in the form of laws, but without being too restrictive, so that the creative and chaotic types still have an outlet for their drive and natural ability. They achieve this by having their fingers in many pies if you pardon the expression, they are involved in local politics, and often have a representative within most of the major guilds and trades. With
orders feeding down from the top of the librarians, it is the responsibility of these representatives to use their influence to steer society in the librarians given direction.

To represent their drive for the balance of all things the librarians worship Astraea, the star maiden who carries the scales of justice. As an organisation they keep very secretive, and are usually very subtle with
their plans to change things, using their representatives in the guilds as their voice. If they wish a movement towards evil they shall use their messenger within the guild of assassins who nobody would suspect of greater intentions when she comes out with the suggestion of “lets kill more people”.

The guild itself has a huge variety of people within it, most of them specialists in one form or another, all of them firm believers in the guilds ideals and vision. The guild also have a lower form of membership for the people who may not subscribe to the guilds ideas, but will still prove a useful asset. These people are often contract workers, who get paid for a single job, although many return for further work.
