Recruiting for a 'Short' Armagada campaign

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

There has developed a small opening in the Leicester area schedule. I propose to fill it. Leah is not yet ready to replace 'Beholder', and the Armagada campaign is on a temporary hiatus. The new campaign will be a 'short' campaign, but not necessarily in the duration sense.wink

The reason I call it a short campaign is that it will be restricted to characters from two races only. Halflings, or Gnomes. Your choice of class from the 3.5 PHB starting at level one. Your choice of Halfling or Gnome, but roughly equal proportions would be nice for reasons that may never become apparent.

To make matters worse, you should know that in the part of my world where this takes place, Halflings and Gnomes do not get on particularly well. Each race has its legends about the reasons. The Halflings blame the Gnomes, and the Gnomes blame the Halflings. each believes that the races used to work well together in the distant past, but that there was some kind of falling out. in the dim and distant past, whose exact cause seems a mystery.

No one has any valid reason why they distrust each other, and there are even quiet instances of friendships between the races. These friendships are frowned upon by groups of Halflings or Gnomes, but individually it is sometimes different.

Imagine the childish attitude that all red headed kids are freaks and smell funny, apart from you Jimmy, you are different. You are my friend. However I might have to say you smell if my mates are around, 'cos they don't know you like I do. That is what it's like in this community among the adults.

There are quite a few humans, a smaller number of dwarves and elves around, but PCs will all be either Halfling or Gnome, and will like the other PCs whatever their race. (Except when others are around, when they might pretend not to like each other, cos it wouldn't do to get a reputation as a Halfling-lover or Gnome-lover.)

You will not be staying in your own community long, and there will be no openly hostile inter-party actions. You all secretly like each other. Its the rest that smell/steal/eat babies/wet the bed/look funny.

The game days/times/venue is yet to be set in stone, but it will probably be Tuesday Evenings alternate weeks at my place. 'cos I have a games room. That will severely limit numbers and priority will be given to suitable folks who can commit to a regular schedule. Naturally, if you are averse to playing a Gnome or a Halfling, then this campaign will not be your cup of tea.

Why only Gnomes or Halflings? Because I said so. That is what the campaign needs. You should also be aware that I like s bit of backstory, and your backstory can and may well be used if its good and I get the chance. However this is my world, and backstories will have to comply with it, so they should be discussed with me individually before you get too carried away.

Have a rough draft up, but need to go to work 10 mins ago so will finish it up later :-)

Need names for the other PC's since we know or know of each other and the cleric deity too.

My first attempt at writing anything like this since school 12 odd years ago, so be nice :-D

Hahaha, very nice. I reckon you've set mister Toe-chomper up very well, but unlike school I won’t be pulling out a different coloured pen to annotate your hard work, don't worry! biggrin

I've always had a soft spot for the temple of 'insert deity here' too! wink That made me chuckle.
Don't let me catch you 'trimming' your toenails though! Although a dislike of kobolds is always welcome! biggrin

Apoc posts: 78

Cheers :-)

you won't catch me trimming them, but those scratchy lumps in your bedroll... evil

Drogo is a secret member of the insert deity here cult, so shhhhhh... don't tell everyone.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

It appears we now need input from (insert cleric name) cleric of (insert deity) and (insert mage name).

And I mention meeting a ranger too :-) i think i have all bases covered now, without treading on anyone else's stories I hope.

Hope it fits in ok with what you had in mind Len, and the fact I added a river to the area too redface

I don't remember Mike's stuff, but my halfling Ranger's name is going to be Skwigelf Wartooth. He's a grumpy fellow, although with a kind heart hidden in there somewhere. But he has very little time for order and law. As far as backstory goes.

I have a basic idea but nothing concrete, as I'm not 100% familiar with the setting as yet. But I'll be playing off the idea that he was raised in a family of Halfling protectors, and so he had a very strong loyalty to his home village. I was thinking this village would be located somewhere along the outskirts to the south, near the more barbarous lands. While out adventuring (perhaps hunting, or exploring or just having fun), the village was overrun, and as far as he knows, wiped out. Although he was not sure how or why. He had to spend the next few months surviving on his own in the wilds. And thus became more in tune with the forests and hills and became a ranger. He seeks now to protect other halflings by any means necessary.

Only one complication is that my laptop died a few days ago, and erased him! So now I need to recreate him from scratch.

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for stores where Mike and I could buy dice?

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Dice should be available from either Dominos (toy shop) on Hight Street or Forbidden Planet on Silver street.

Don't worry unduly if you can't get any, I have some spares. (As does probably everyone else?)

Now, it begins to sound like there is a bit of a problem to the south that I was previously unaware of. Marauding kobolds wiping out entire villages! Whatever next. It almost sounds like there is a job to be done. A job for a party of friends and survivors maybe?

I might not even need to have written this adventure if it carries on like this.

Kobolds, you say?! Dastardly!

(Secretly, Desert Kobolds are my favorite playable race, in appropriate settings of course.)

Also, we were at dominoes yesterday, and Toys R us today, but alas, no dice (:D).

I'll try Forbidden planet yet. I'm starting to get more comfortable with the city. It looks like we'll be moving to a place more to the south though, near Fosse Park down Narborough Road.

I have some pink frosted dice I got for my wife that you can use ;)

...

I'll let mike use those.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Ah, Narborough Rd, Student dormitory and land of the takeaway. Leah used to live down there. I'm sure she will be able to tell you where everything is. Except maybe the lavender. That is something special. (We'll have to tell you about that on Tuesday now I expect.)

I has a bag 'O bag 'O dice. You won't be forced to roll pink. - Unless you really want frosted pink dice.

Len

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Nothing wrong with frosted pink... although I may be having a mental association thing with icing sugar... how do the pink dice taste?

Ahhh I remember Studentsville, can't beat Narbourough Road. Not even with a big stick... with a nail through it... and Weapon Focus (big stick+nail)! biggrin

But if you guys find yourself anywhere between Fosse Park and Narborough Road, you'll be pretty much in my way on my way coming off the M69, so if y'all be needing a lift..? Well as long as you're somewhere in Leicester I'm sure I could come find you.

Also, I only have one and a half sets of dice so I aint no help there, but trust me; Len and Leah could kit out an army with their dice collections!

And if it'll make you feel any better, I've no idea what the lavender is either. It does sound like somewhere the owner of a set of frosted pink dice might fit in though! wink When are we going!? biggrin

A lift would be most appreciated. But not for next week as we'll be on residence at Leicester for international student's week.

The place we're looking at is on a street called the Kingsway. Which is maybe 2-5 minutes north along Narborough Road from Fosse Park. Seems like a pretty great area. There don't really seem to be too many bad areas in Leicester. But we're coming from Toronto which has some pretty rough areas.

Mike has asked me to post his backstory. It's rather involved:

The Order of the Retribution is a fairly new one by the standard of religious sects. Gnomes are well known to worship Garl Glittergold, the Gnomish god of Protection and Trickery. Since leading them into the world Garl has looked over the Gnomes and in turn they have embraced him nearly universally as their patron and overlord. Nearly. The Order of the Retribution is a small group of Gnomes who for generations have believed that while Garl Glittergold is all well and good, a truly strong hand is needed to see the race has its retribution against their foes, Halflings and Kobolds alike, as well as to hand out “Justified Brutality” to any who would transgress the laws of Cuthbert or who would otherwise harm or wrong the people of Armagada.

Secretive and paranoid in nature, the Order of the Cudgel exists within the church of Garl Glittergold in many of the larger Gnomish settlements, its members paying homage to Garl while working together in the name of St. Cuthbert.

Garl, ever the trickster himself, sees no problem with this duplicity and oftentimes finds ways to further the Order’s goals just to see where it will get them. After all, one God or the other the Order, in a very general sense, seeks the same thing as the clerics of Garl Glittergold – the protection of the Gnomish race, and the destruction (or at least humiliation) of its enemies.

The Order of the Retribution, was founded by Finklebings Snapgem, a former priest of Garl Glittergold only just converted to Saint Cuthbert's faith himself. When Finklebings discovered an evil warlord had been a devil in disguise raising undead in order to try and expand his influence, he founded the new order in order to track down other evil monsters preying on or living among mortals in Armagada.

The order has three branches: The Cross, The Cudgel and The Shield:

· The Cross is an arm of the sect dedicated to conversion of fellow Gnomes who have been observed and deemed both worthy of St. Cuthbert’s trust, but able to contribute faithfully to the cause. The Cross is also responsible for the training of new members of the Order, both those recruited and those born into the Order by virtue of his father’s rank.

· The Cudgel is an arm of the sect dedicated to carrying out the main thrust of the sect’s functions – seeking out and destroying threats to the people of Armagada, namely its Gnomish population.

· The Shield is an arm of the sect which focuses on protecting the Order itself. The Shield functions as an internal police of sorts, ensuring that secrecy and subtlety are paramount in the Order’s affairs.

Brandoberris Stoneheart “Pickles” Tronfee is a member of the Order of the Retribution and a new initiate of the Cudgel. As a Cleric of the Order, Brando wears a mask of rank to protect his identity and rarely (which as we all know is rare) gives his name or indulges in any of the merriments generally associated with Gnomes. When Brando earned his mask he was given the name of Bravewatch Cudgel. As Bravewatch, Brando is dour and perhaps even grumpy though as many of his Order and many of his race, he has a good heart, and is a dedicated friend. Bravewatch, as each initiate of the Cudgel is required to do, has now set out into the world at large to test himself against the enemies of Armagada and the enemies of his people.

My replacement Halflings have arrived so no need for severed toes..... ....this timeevil

And there are 4 now! Heresy released another one so she will be in my painting cue along with the rest :-)

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Ooow, backstories and extra Halfling figures abound!
We're almost kind of nearly ready! That's fairly unprecedented I think! Hahaha.

Anyway, just checking no one (apart from Leah) will be wanting a lift this Tuesday before I disappear for the weekend.
Let me know if you does!

Anyways, have fun all!

Well, Mike and I would like a lift, but we're not 100% sure where we'll be then. We move out of this place and into Oadby Student village on Tuesday. Which from the looks of it, is right here

I'm not sure how badly that is out of your way, of course.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

I don't think I'll need a lift Charlie. I think the stairs will be OK. eek

Len

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

That is only 1.9 of our English Miles away from Leah, and if Charlie were really clever, it would be sort of on the way to mine through the country back roads.

'course, a decent halfling ranger would already know that. wink

Len

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Don't blame me then if you get half way up the stairs mister!

I'll rely on the magic talking box (that doesn't actually talk anymore) to direct me so I should be fine until I pick up the halfling ranger and then we'll be 'sort of on the way' to Len's I guess!
