Recruiting for a 'Short' Armagada campaign

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

There has developed a small opening in the Leicester area schedule. I propose to fill it. Leah is not yet ready to replace 'Beholder', and the Armagada campaign is on a temporary hiatus. The new campaign will be a 'short' campaign, but not necessarily in the duration sense.wink

The reason I call it a short campaign is that it will be restricted to characters from two races only. Halflings, or Gnomes. Your choice of class from the 3.5 PHB starting at level one. Your choice of Halfling or Gnome, but roughly equal proportions would be nice for reasons that may never become apparent.

To make matters worse, you should know that in the part of my world where this takes place, Halflings and Gnomes do not get on particularly well. Each race has its legends about the reasons. The Halflings blame the Gnomes, and the Gnomes blame the Halflings. each believes that the races used to work well together in the distant past, but that there was some kind of falling out. in the dim and distant past, whose exact cause seems a mystery.

No one has any valid reason why they distrust each other, and there are even quiet instances of friendships between the races. These friendships are frowned upon by groups of Halflings or Gnomes, but individually it is sometimes different.

Imagine the childish attitude that all red headed kids are freaks and smell funny, apart from you Jimmy, you are different. You are my friend. However I might have to say you smell if my mates are around, 'cos they don't know you like I do. That is what it's like in this community among the adults.

There are quite a few humans, a smaller number of dwarves and elves around, but PCs will all be either Halfling or Gnome, and will like the other PCs whatever their race. (Except when others are around, when they might pretend not to like each other, cos it wouldn't do to get a reputation as a Halfling-lover or Gnome-lover.)

You will not be staying in your own community long, and there will be no openly hostile inter-party actions. You all secretly like each other. Its the rest that smell/steal/eat babies/wet the bed/look funny.

The game days/times/venue is yet to be set in stone, but it will probably be Tuesday Evenings alternate weeks at my place. 'cos I have a games room. That will severely limit numbers and priority will be given to suitable folks who can commit to a regular schedule. Naturally, if you are averse to playing a Gnome or a Halfling, then this campaign will not be your cup of tea.

Why only Gnomes or Halflings? Because I said so. That is what the campaign needs. You should also be aware that I like s bit of backstory, and your backstory can and may well be used if its good and I get the chance. However this is my world, and backstories will have to comply with it, so they should be discussed with me individually before you get too carried away.

BWa ha ha ha hahahaaa hahaaa Leicester Uni rules! I'd go back in a heart beat if I could. So yes... good choice. biggrin
Glad to know you landed okay by the way and that you're ready to give it a whirl. Don't worry, I'll be intro-ing my character next session too; if my back would be willing to give me a break.

When is the next session going to be, by the way? In two weeks I suppose? I'm looking forward to it. So far, I have to say, Leicester has been pretty nice, everyone's been quite friendly. Also, I can't get over how cheap drinks are here in comparison to Toronto.

Ileandra Young posts: 116 United Kingdom

Lol, yeah, Leicester be luuuurvely. I moved here for uni from London and haven't managed to get away yet smile! That was eight years ago.
And yes, its a fortnightly game, I assume, so it will be a lil while before we all gather together.

Ah, that seems so far away. haha

If anyone's interested, Mike and I are basically apartment hunting over the next few nights, but we're not really doing anything during the nights. So if anyone wants to get together for drinks, or play some Inn Fighting (a really fun card game), we'd probably be available.

edit. Also, I have a quick question for Len. I ended up changing my mind about the halfling bard and I'm leaning towards halfling Ranger instead. But I wanted to ask one question, do you consider the feat Manyshot to work with Thrown Weapons or arrows only? I ask because that will determine how I make my Ranger, and I know some DMs are ok with Manyshot working for thrown weapons, and others aren't since the description seems to specify arrows.

Thanks!

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Manyshot for me is the outlandish technique of loading more than one arrow on a single bowstring and launching them together.

For a halfling, loading a sling with several pebbles at once would work better than the multiple arrows thing. Throwing several javelins would not as they would need to be thrown separately. Throwing several javelins in a single throw might prove a step too far.

Rapidshot is a different matter. That would be developing the speed to get off more than one shot. I would allow rapid shot with javelins or other individually thrown weapons.

That sounds fair Len. Specifically, I was thinking of throwing daggers or axes, not quite as big as the javlins, but much larger than arrows.

In either case, I decided to make him a throwing axe Ranger anyhow. Just because I think it sounds neat!

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Ooow interesting. I'm assuming you can't really go the ranger's archery route with throwing axes, so would that be a two-weapon fighting ranger with Rapidshot? There'll be axes flying all over the place! biggrin Remember to go collect the ones you chuck around otherwise it might get expensive replacing them all!

Actually, with the exception of Many-shot, all the archery feats only say 'ranged weapon' which is why I was asking about manyshot. Since the rest all work with archery. Which is why I was asking about it. But I figure that even if Len would prefer Manyshot to be arrows-only, the rest of the feats are still worth taking.

I have a devious plan I'm working out to make this character into a rather strange one, but I don't want to spill all the beans just yet. (unless Len wants to know, I really just don't want the rest of the players knowing yet.)

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Oooow mysterious, I like it! wink
I'm sure we'll enjoy the beans when they are eventually spilt!

I had never looked at it that way. I've always seen the ranger as either a pair of swords, or a bow, a pair of swords, or a bow. You sir, have climbed so far outside the box, I don't think even the Track feat would help find you! wink

Let he who is without Many-shot cast the first axe. I'm sure Jesus said something like that... Where's the cleric? He'll know.

Actually, just to play devil's advocate here, could you make Many-Shot in this instance something akin to a lesser version of Two-Weapon Fighting, just specifically in order to throw two axes simultaneously? It’s probably not a good idea. I would go and read the specifics of the feat, but I rather think it is sleepy time.

Apoc posts: 78

I thought I read there was a feat for duel throwing weapons, not that I know much about anything at this point :-D

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Throwing axes. Hmm. Axes are thrown differently to javelins, which require an all-body input. Axes could be thrown left and right handed simultaneously. I am going to say yes to Manyshot with axes being two axes, one with each hand, thrown at the same time. I have seen it done and so believe it. The same would apply to daggers. They are also thrown more with a flick of the wrist, like axes.

So provided it only ever refers to two at once, yes. Manyshot would work. Again, Rapidshot would also work there if combined with Quickdraw. Thus using three feats (When you get them) to get off four axes a round, six when your BAB got high enough at 6th level!

This begins to look like a ranger who appears to be two-weapon, but is in fact ranged. Having the halfling bonus to thrown weapons. I can see the goblin saying to his mate. "Watch him he's got two axes. Ugh, correction I have one of them in my chest."

Great! You fellows just made my day!

Ileandra Young posts: 116 United Kingdom

Eeeps... this is gonna be good!

Apoc posts: 78

Will have to use a stand in model for Drogo since my wife managed to throw him and the other two halflings in the bin it seems mad

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Awww now that's just not on!
Had you upset her by any chance? wink
If anything this only strengthens your argument for your own dungeony room! So every cloud and all that... rolleyes

Oh and Len, I don't got it figured out how to add separate pages for individual characters in the wiki-tiki-tarbuck thingy. I had two choices as far as I could tell; one was to have a go, see what happens, and risk destroying the internet. The other was to run away like a scaredy-cat and post this... I went for the second one. biggrin

Anyway, the weekends nearly over! I hope you all had fun, I mean obviously apart from Robwink; doesn't seem like you had too much fun this weekend, but on the plus side - Next weekend can't be any worse! biggrin and only a week and a li'l' bit before session numero the next!

Apoc posts: 78

Aye, I am not a happy camper :-( will be using her little toe with a face painted on as a replacement evil lol.

Have been trying to write a background for Drogo too, but it kept growing and growing so I stopped :-) need to summarise it otherwise it will be a novel in itself and not a very well written one! hehehe

At least I have a rough idea, rough being the word though.

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

So Drogo Toe-Chomper will be played by an actual chomped off toe? The world is as it should be then!

There's nothing wrong with an extensive and excessive background for your character. The longer you work on it, and the more effort you put in just makes it that much sweeter for the DM when he kills you off two or three sessions in! twisted Not that Len is that sadistic! Nope, he's sadistic in many other ways... just not that way... well, not usually... neutral Hahaha.

Lesson number #18: Don't poke fun at the DM unless you're bored of your current character... and possibly the next one! eek

Well I'll look forward to finding out a bit (or a whole lot) more about Mr Toe-Chomper then, but after last Tuesday I'm just assuming Drogo is a shorter version of Logen Ninefingers... just with an extra finger, and possibly an extra toe depending on how quick your wife is! wink

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Rob. I am willing to bet it was just an accident.surprised Probably not worth the risk of lopping off a toe in case you end up serving time for it. I don't know for certain, 'cos I've never tried, but I bet the law would be on her side. Damned judges, unless you can find one that is willing to role play a chaotic evil barbarian, you'd best assume he will be biased against you.

For you, (Fake Charlie) I will offer one single piece of advice.

On the left hand side, all in its own little box called Quick Edit, is an option to create a page.
Put in the name of the page you wish to create, (and here, the name of your character makes as much sense as almost anything else.) then click the little Create/Edit button.

As if by magic, (and it may indeed BE magic, but I'm not sure if its Evocation or Conjuration.) the Internet somehow knows that you want a page to be created with that name. It will then present you with a page, all your own, on which to write your "stuff".

Len

Apoc posts: 78

A few gold coins in a bribe and i should be ok lol

Have been digging through my endless amounts of hobby stuff and have unearthed a few D&D esque figures i can paint up for future games :-) unfortunatly no halfling barbarians :-( but they will give me something to do until Drogo MKII arrives :-)

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Hey, hey! Why thank ya Len you genius you! wink

Look at me casting Create Page with a +1 bonus!

Short Armagada

And I even figured out what I was doin' wrong with the linky-linking! biggrin
