Recruiting for a 'Short' Armagada campaign

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

There has developed a small opening in the Leicester area schedule. I propose to fill it. Leah is not yet ready to replace 'Beholder', and the Armagada campaign is on a temporary hiatus. The new campaign will be a 'short' campaign, but not necessarily in the duration sense.wink

The reason I call it a short campaign is that it will be restricted to characters from two races only. Halflings, or Gnomes. Your choice of class from the 3.5 PHB starting at level one. Your choice of Halfling or Gnome, but roughly equal proportions would be nice for reasons that may never become apparent.

To make matters worse, you should know that in the part of my world where this takes place, Halflings and Gnomes do not get on particularly well. Each race has its legends about the reasons. The Halflings blame the Gnomes, and the Gnomes blame the Halflings. each believes that the races used to work well together in the distant past, but that there was some kind of falling out. in the dim and distant past, whose exact cause seems a mystery.

No one has any valid reason why they distrust each other, and there are even quiet instances of friendships between the races. These friendships are frowned upon by groups of Halflings or Gnomes, but individually it is sometimes different.

Imagine the childish attitude that all red headed kids are freaks and smell funny, apart from you Jimmy, you are different. You are my friend. However I might have to say you smell if my mates are around, 'cos they don't know you like I do. That is what it's like in this community among the adults.

There are quite a few humans, a smaller number of dwarves and elves around, but PCs will all be either Halfling or Gnome, and will like the other PCs whatever their race. (Except when others are around, when they might pretend not to like each other, cos it wouldn't do to get a reputation as a Halfling-lover or Gnome-lover.)

You will not be staying in your own community long, and there will be no openly hostile inter-party actions. You all secretly like each other. Its the rest that smell/steal/eat babies/wet the bed/look funny.

The game days/times/venue is yet to be set in stone, but it will probably be Tuesday Evenings alternate weeks at my place. 'cos I have a games room. That will severely limit numbers and priority will be given to suitable folks who can commit to a regular schedule. Naturally, if you are averse to playing a Gnome or a Halfling, then this campaign will not be your cup of tea.

Why only Gnomes or Halflings? Because I said so. That is what the campaign needs. You should also be aware that I like s bit of backstory, and your backstory can and may well be used if its good and I get the chance. However this is my world, and backstories will have to comply with it, so they should be discussed with me individually before you get too carried away.

Oooow, diamonds. Shininess!

Who can resist a 'proven-ly' suicidal adventure when there's diamonds to be had!? Quite aptly my Halfling knows about legends, and my Gnome knows about diamonds, or at least shiny stuff you dig out the ground.

Oh and Robster, I would be very much honoured if you'd let me steal one of your halfling miniatures (Just during these session obviously rolleyes), I quite had my eye on the fella with the hat and long coat, Mister Van Halfling. Without the sword and crossbow he'd be perfect, but he'll more than do, if you don't mind of course. Don't feel the need to paint him up just for me though.

Apoc posts: 78

That's fine, the sword can be filed off and his crossbow arm is just one of the options, so you can choose from a bag o' gold, Flamin' torch or a holding a wanted poster (or can be a map or any document of your choosing i suppose).

Not much of him to paint being the wee fella that he is, so not a problem. Plus it gives me an excuse to put off painting a bloodbowl team I'm doing on commission for a couple more days :-)

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

I see you live by the old proverb; 'Put off today what you may find a good excuse not to do at all tomorrow.' wink

Which is admirable! But I don't want you to be going to any trouble, and filing bits off sounds a little extreme too! eek Hahaha.

Also I haven't had the green light on whether this fella'll be suited to the campaign, as from those arm choices I imaging he'd be holding the script of a classical play to be performed for the king. On the back, coincidentally, there happens to be a map of the king's palace with little '$' symbols to indicate 'interesting' locations... wink

Which reminds me, Lenny-boy; did you get my email? I could very conceivably have sent it to the wrong place entirely, so I guess I ought to check.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

I did get your email, and your little chap will be perfectly OK. I am not going to stipulate which races people do play, and Leah is yet to state a preference, or anything else for that matter.
Oi! Missy. How about a word or two from you one way or t'other?

I will say that the party will be at a slight disadvantage if it is all one race, but I am happy to play it as you prefer, after all, I am limiting it enough already.

Len

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Well in that case I'll bring the Halfling and the Gnome and be ready to play whichever the party would prefer... or I'll just roll a d2 (otherwise known as a coin).

I wasn't so much worried about the race though, it was more that the Halfling's particular skill set and penchant for misdirection might not lend itself, but who am I kidding!? If it comes to that he can sell the neatly folded butler's uniform he's got in his backpack for a sheepskin and start infiltrating the odd farmstead.
Some people like to go around mugging folk, some people like to go thievin' around in the dead of night, but sometimes it's much more satisfying to do it right under someone's nose! wink

And am I right in thinking you're waiting on one more player besides Leah?

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

I am hoping for one more, yes. We could do what we did with the other game and run two characters each to make a larger small party, but I'd prefer an additional player.

Len

Ileandra Young posts: 116 United Kingdom

Okay, after much dithering - and understanding that my idea needs a LOT more work - methinks I have a halfling sorcerer up my sleeve. Not gnome... ew.

Though after the length of time it took me to build Kodara (see Xorvintaal thread razz ) I think I'll need a lil more time to get her sorted.

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

What is everyone's problem with Gnomes? That's just damn racist!
Good to see Leah alive and well though! smile

Are we not allowed to press-gang people into joining? I feel that would be a sensible and acceptable way to proceed. Or bribery! That always works. Or blackmail? You got any dirty on anyone? Better to have someone there against their own free will and better judgement than not at all! biggrin

Oh and one more thing; the Gnome I could play needs just one finishing touch and I is a bit stuck!

He needs an interesting and useful Craft, Knowledge, or Profession skill.

Coming from a small mining settlement a little way up the Eastern slopes of the Spina Armagada mountain range I figure perhaps something to do with what ever is being mined there (Which also hasn't been quite set in stone yet - Ooow look I made a funny! Or was that supposed to be 'no pun intended'?rolleyes). Or maybe potholing or spelunking; something that might make use of Climb and Use Rope? Might be useful to be able to strap the fragile Halfling sorcerer into a harness and winch her down into the bowels of the Earth! twisted Don't know if the Barbarian would fancy that though.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

A gnome miner with that background is most apt. It being the Gnome homeland and all.

Ranks in Profession: Miner. would work well for that climb/use rope ability.

I would allow a character a synergy with climb & use rope checks with 5 ranks in Miner. You only get 4 at level 1, so if you are maxed out I will give a +1 instead of the normal +2 provided you put one more into it at level up you get the other +1. Is that a deal? It will also offer a synergy with the appropriate appraise checks and appropriate knowledge dungeoneering too.

Len

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Go me pre-empting the demographic nature of the region! wink

Miner it is then. Well that was easily sorted! I wasn't too sure if Prof.(Miner) would just mean a proficiency with pickaxes, and an inability to let slightly more than half a dozen singing dwarves pass by without joining in... biggrin

I hadn't thought of synergy bonuses, but that sounds good to me. Although if it's traditionally 5 ranks minimum I'm sure he can wait until he qualifies properly for the bonuses (provided of course he doesn't fall to his death having failed a climb check before then!). Pretty sure he should be able to take a rank in Miner each level anyway so he'll be a one man gnome, walking colliery before long! wink Hahaha.

Thanks a plenty Len.

Altogether now!
Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go...

Ileandra Young posts: 116 United Kingdom

So chirpy... lol.
You make me laugh. Even if you are going to play a gnome. razz

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Well I was going to play a halfling bard called Charlo... he may be related to Bilbo and Frodo and Dil - Oiy! Stop it, this is a family show!

... erm, where was I? Oh yes, but because of some people there's an excess of the little sods! So being the accommodating little chappy that I is I found the gnome in the hole.
He needs a couple more names though I think - Kallkin Kaarlnock Charimble Gulnackle, and a reason for leaving the little mining town to finish off his back story and hes golden - oh also: what the heck might they be mining up there?
Any suggestionations for these feel free to sling 'em this way.

Maybe we should annoy Len with a whole party of halflings! biggrin Cause if you want chirpy you might prefer Charlo.
And just to upset Rob after very kindly offering up one of his precious miniatures, as I probably won’t know which character I'll be playin' until Tuesday I definitely wouldn't go violating the little figure with the hat just for me, although interestingly the Gnome does have a hand crossbow (Which was ridiculously expensive by the way!eek)

Apoc posts: 78

It's all good, i'm having fun painting the three of them up anyway :-) i'll bring them along anyway as they are rather tiny :-)

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

OK, the game is on the calendar.
Time to click the Add Me button.

Len

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Ooow would you look at that. We're all calendared up!

Oh, also, does that mean this campaign'll be getting its own Tiki Masala page? (Cause I know how much Len enjoys the extra work!wink) It needs to be showcased to the world so we can battle this deeply ingrained prejudice against the small folk... and hopefully attract some more lovely peoples to come play with us. rolleyes

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Yes Charlie/Stuart I will get around to opening a Tiki-Masala for the game as you have asked.

Len

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

... Just kinda pushing this thread back onto the first page. Shamelessly selfish I know redface, but unless folks have been coming in via the back door we're still down a little fella or two!

If no one signs up soon I'm gonna start going door to door, and believe me, you don't want that; I have a Jehovah’s Witness in the family! Of course, no offence to Joho's the world over but if there's a Cleric domain that gives bonuses to denying people their DEX modifier to AC whilst on a doorstep, that'll be the one! biggrin

Anyway... I digress.

Hey guys!

So I just signed up for the site, and here's a bit of background on things: My friend Mike and I(Trevor) are moving from Canada to Leicester to attend Law school at the University of Leicester. We're somewhat determined to find a friendly group to play some 3.5 D&D with once we come over. We're flying over on Tuesday (the 14th!)

If you'll have us, we'd like to attend at least one session and see if we mesh with the rest of you all.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Canadians are OK in my book. 'course I doubt I could eat a whole one by myself. eek Two additional players would max out the game in terms of available space but that if fine by me.

Our first session will be on the day you fly, so I seriously doubt you would make that session. and if you do, you would qualify as seriously nuts given that you would be -

  • Jet-lagged.
  • Not moved in to accommodation.
  • Not unpacked.
  • In a new country.
  • At a new university.

So, lets allow for you not making the first session.
If you are both playing, then to keep the numbers right we need one Gnome, One Halfling, or two gnomes. I know it is odd but the even distribution of races will be more important than class balance in this game.

If only one intends to play, that should be a Gnome.

for the first session we can simply say that the other two have to work, are still in jail, or fulfil some kind of family commitment which will make them more determined to be adventurers.

... and well done Charlie for the well timed bump.

Len.

Sounds good.

We wouldn't be able to play on the Tuesday anyways, as our flight leaves Toronto at 10pm, Eastern time, and we don't actually arrive until 10 AM on the wednesday, UK time.

And I figure it will take a least a few days just to figure out how to get around the town anyways. I'll let you know our class/race combos once we figure them out, and try and find a way to integrate them.

e. Oh, and just to be clear, we have a Barbarian, a Sorcerer and a Bard already? Is that correct?
