Recruiting for a 'Short' Armagada campaign

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

There has developed a small opening in the Leicester area schedule. I propose to fill it. Leah is not yet ready to replace 'Beholder', and the Armagada campaign is on a temporary hiatus. The new campaign will be a 'short' campaign, but not necessarily in the duration sense.wink

The reason I call it a short campaign is that it will be restricted to characters from two races only. Halflings, or Gnomes. Your choice of class from the 3.5 PHB starting at level one. Your choice of Halfling or Gnome, but roughly equal proportions would be nice for reasons that may never become apparent.

To make matters worse, you should know that in the part of my world where this takes place, Halflings and Gnomes do not get on particularly well. Each race has its legends about the reasons. The Halflings blame the Gnomes, and the Gnomes blame the Halflings. each believes that the races used to work well together in the distant past, but that there was some kind of falling out. in the dim and distant past, whose exact cause seems a mystery.

No one has any valid reason why they distrust each other, and there are even quiet instances of friendships between the races. These friendships are frowned upon by groups of Halflings or Gnomes, but individually it is sometimes different.

Imagine the childish attitude that all red headed kids are freaks and smell funny, apart from you Jimmy, you are different. You are my friend. However I might have to say you smell if my mates are around, 'cos they don't know you like I do. That is what it's like in this community among the adults.

There are quite a few humans, a smaller number of dwarves and elves around, but PCs will all be either Halfling or Gnome, and will like the other PCs whatever their race. (Except when others are around, when they might pretend not to like each other, cos it wouldn't do to get a reputation as a Halfling-lover or Gnome-lover.)

You will not be staying in your own community long, and there will be no openly hostile inter-party actions. You all secretly like each other. Its the rest that smell/steal/eat babies/wet the bed/look funny.

The game days/times/venue is yet to be set in stone, but it will probably be Tuesday Evenings alternate weeks at my place. 'cos I have a games room. That will severely limit numbers and priority will be given to suitable folks who can commit to a regular schedule. Naturally, if you are averse to playing a Gnome or a Halfling, then this campaign will not be your cup of tea.

Why only Gnomes or Halflings? Because I said so. That is what the campaign needs. You should also be aware that I like s bit of backstory, and your backstory can and may well be used if its good and I get the chance. However this is my world, and backstories will have to comply with it, so they should be discussed with me individually before you get too carried away.

Hey that's fine, I'm sure Minnie can handle that. Or at the very least a spell to avoid getting her dress in any worse a state than it already is. No problem!

Hey guys, sorry for the very late information here. But I'm afraid it's going to be very difficult for Mike and I to make any more sessions.

As I tried to explain on the phone two weeks ago (Before my phone died, Sorry about that!) was that our proposed house near Fosse park fell through, as they did not want to rent to dog owners.

So we ended up having to find a place on very short notice and settled on a semi-detached out in Barwell (near Hinckley) so it's about 45m-1h away from Leicester, depending on traffic. To make matters worse, the last bus running out our way leaves St Margret's station at 10:50, meaning we'd only be able to play until 10 or so if we were to come out. Further complicating matters is the fact that we both have 9AM classes on Wednesday. This means we're waking up at 6AM, so we would both like to crawl into bed by 10pm if possible. Meaning we'd only be able to play until 8:30 or 9PM at best.

However, one bit of possible good news is that we're only beholden to this place for 6 months, and have another two and a half years left in England after that. Our hope is that we find a place in Leicester proper after those six months are up, at which time we could judge how busy our work load is and figure out if we can squeeze in some D&D.

Sorry again guys,

Trevor

Thanks for the explanation Trevor. So, we have a six month opening it seems.

I shall have to assess the possibilities in that case. I can certainly see Barwell being an issue as its not exactly on "Charlies" route, by any stretch of the imagination.

Are we using the add-on source books like complete warrior, adventurer and etc? or are we just using the PHB?

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Normally just PHB, but it depends on what you want. I don't deny anything that does not cause problems in the setting and is not 'broken'. (Some splat book stuff is simply problematic.)

Wasn't looking at anything too odd, I was thinking about taking monkey grip or throw anything from the complete warrior book.

Still not decided, as there are a lot of routes I can take Drogo down even just using the PHB.

Disappointing to hear we'll be losing our Canadian brethren, at least for the time being! sad Hopefully you guys'll sort your living accommodation out and you'll be back in the heart of D&Dland before you know it!

Monkey grip being basically use bigger weapons than is normally possible, if you can justify it in a specific case, yes. (see below)

Throw anything? You are a Halfling Barbarian, if you can throw it, throw it. That is perfectly in character for a raging barbarian. Reason goes a little off track, and throwing things comes easy. So I would say that provided you are raging, yes, throw anything, but it must be 'throw-able'. That is justified by "I am mad, I pick up the chair and hurl it at the spider."

If you are not raging, then to throw stuff that is not normally used as a weapon would require forethought. So that would be something that took one round's consideration, during which you could perform other actions, but you must declare that you are working out whether to throw X the round before you throw it. Not just "I pick up the chair and hurl it at the spider." but "Damn, that's my last one, I am out of tridents. That chair looks like it would hurt, I shall pick up that chair and see if I can kill the spider with it."

I have seen monkey grip used to be plain silly, so that would have be on a case-by-case basis. For example, if you tried to tell me that you can wield a full size (Medium) Greatsword with one hand, I would point out that it weighs eight pounds, and therefore has great momentum too. You might be able to lift it with one hand, but it would swing you, not you swing it. Use two hands, and it would still be problematic. I would impose penalties. However, an appropriately sized (Small) Greatsword would be much smaller, and so I would allow it.

I am leaning more towards point blank shot, which will help beef him back up a little and will lead to feats that will make him a bit of a trident master with extra accuracy and such following further down the line.

It stands to reason that since he spends most of his time lobbing tridents, that he is going to get real good at it biggrin

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

He does do that rather well.wink

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Did you just skewer five goblins against that wall with two tridents..!? And then knock the last one on his ass by launching a chair at him!?
I'll just. Well. Erm... I'll just be putting the hand crossbow away now then...

There was a feat I noticed in Races of Destiny, p.156:

Roofwalker - Able to walk across precarious surfaces at full speed without taking -5 penalty to Balance check. If intentionally jumping from a height take damage as if dropped 20' less if a successful jump check is made, and finally gain +1 AC (Dodge) vs. any opponent at a different elevation to you.

There's quite a few prerequisites (Dodge, Mobility, Balance{5}, Jump{5}), and for Kal I think I'd rather it was called Mountain-goat Walker, but still.
'Tis not a feat I desperately want. It just spoke to me is all.

Of course, if you're foolish enough to let Kal take such a feat I will be determined to have him be the first Gnome to scale the Spina-Armagada mountain range and come down safely on the other side... well come down the other side at least... biggrin

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

A few other things that might prove useful for that particular 'first' to get in the record books.

Current provisions include what, on casual inspection, appears to resemble a sorceress, and a big(ish) vicious(ish - recently neutered) barbarian. I'm sure a quick multi-class dip into Cleric (for purely in-character reasons biggrin) should be all that's needed for a magnificent success... or at least some magnificent deaths... or at least deaths... rolleyes

... Maybe take the feat and walk around the mountain... just cause you got it, don't mean you should flaunt it! neutral

... What nonsense! That's not a philosophy to live by!

'To the mountain range! And beyond!' - Buzz Lightyear?
