Rise of the Runelords
Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

The campaign ran from Wednesday, November 4th 2009 to Thursday, March 14th 2013.
The party succumbed one fight before the final big one with two casualties (Dagar the Paladin, Telas the Fighter/Thief) and the last two joining Karzoug the Claimer's team (Marcus the Shadow Dancer and Thorak the Storm Druid).
Let this thread be dedicated to the memories of the various PCs who have fought and died against avaricious evil.
We had close to four years of fun, even if as the GM I did not intend to finish the players off so close to the final goal. We played by the rules, monsters and PCs died by the rules, with no GM screen, no fudging of the dice and only a very tiny handful of re-rolls over the years.

Dear Players,

This is it, the new official thread for our weekly game is now located HERE.

Once the whole team has been made aware of the migration, I shall compile all the pages from the Meetup forum and save them as HTML files. These files in turn will be zipped and stored on this website. Finally I shall edit this message and put a link to these archives, so that all of you will be able to peruse them and recount your exploits to your grand-children while holding a glass of old port in your hand by the fireplace... under an imaginary +4 longsword displayed in 3D above that very same fake fireplace of yours. smile

This site may not look as swank as the Meetup one for the moment, but it can only - and will - improve. You are therefore invited to use it, moan about it in the "Debug" thread, thus directly or indirectly improve it.

I propose that our group makes use of the "Friendship" option in TikiWiki, so we shall invite one another to our respective circle of friends. Note that as your GM, being your friend or not will mean nothing to me, I will still send you ugly monsters to kill your character and laugh maniacally about it later!

Next game
As the Trickster would say (*): "I have conceived of a plan..."
I have designed the golem workshop, got the NPCs ready for the potential social interactions. I have even prepared a little sewer encounter for you to enter the location from below in your search for Ironbriar. The "Buzzing Bumblebee" is now a tavern/inn instead of a mere tavern.

The workshop will have all sorts of Golems and constructs available. This is a shop, you could, and should, visit it as potential customers. Even if buying a Golem would still cost a pretty penny at your current level of earnings.

(*) 300 XP for those who pick up the obscure reference. Nope, not Baldrick.

Laurent,

Adam how about chief executive officer of health and safety for a title for the now noble Marcus? this would make him CEO of H&S.
would this be a sufficient upgrade to his liking for a title?lol

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Dear all,

Marcus is Knight Banneret and allowed to fly a square pennant, from what I have read, this is only given for those who got their title through valour.

His position can now at best allow him to give advice on the location and design of traps and other hazards. Risking his own life trying to dislodge a rusted old blade from a Goblin chest is way beneath his stature!

Marcus should be the "Lord Brett Sinclair" of your little troupe... for those old enough to remember "The Persuaders!".

I still want my damn pet pitfiend damnit!!!!

I don't see the problem initally, It would be awesome to have something that large under our power even for a short time. Like the time with the demon squid thing having back up would have been awesome, and usefull and may have allowed us to kill it without risking our lives.

But either way tis not the end of the world, I will try and find a way to get the demon back on my side. (30,000ish GP) and i'm pretty sure some one in Chelaxia would pay more than that to have a pit fiend any way so a win win cash situation.

But it was another excellent adventure, With the award winning Phantasamal Killer finally living up to it's name! Way to go Paul that was awesome!

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Dear Players,

Phantasmal Killer.

As of... now... this highly unbalanced spell is no longer available. razz
No seriously, it had to work at some point, I would have bet that Grazuul would have past the fortitude roll though. Oh well, win some, lose some.

So yep, Nagri, played by Paul, has had his first big kill.
I cannot call Grazuul's death an anticlimax though as everyone's attention was on the roll for the save.

Pit Fiend.

I played it as written and I would have given one boon to Sharax, not a snide interpretation of a wish like interaction either. Avaxial would have returned to help Sharax... then he would have tempted him of course.
Now, for the philosophical point of Avaxial being a CR20 Pit Fiend with nineteen negative levels.
Was he evil? Yes.
That evil? Well... considering a Pit Fiend to be the embodiment of EEEEEVIL, I am tempted to say that nineteen negative levels or not... Yes.
There was however a moral dilemma.

Solving it by a vote of all against one, the only one who could speak Infernal by the way, was expedient albeit not what it could have been as far as the RP in RPG is concerned.
Your PCs should all be punished by taking a level of Paladin! And of course a level of Priest of Asmodeus for Sharax. twisted

Anyway, I was willing to play with fire and get a Pit Fiend around owing a boon to an LV10 PC.
As you all know, the Negative Energy Engines have been activated, you have opened the sluice gate at the dam, the village of Turtleback Ferry is safe.

Sharax now carries with him the ashes of Avaxial and within game mechanics - Outsiders are a pain to resurrect - he can spend as much as required, if he has the dosh, to resurrect his "long-lost-could-have-been-best-friend-ever" Avaxial. However, I advise against believing that Avaxial would be a slave, animal companion, or cohort to whoever brings him back from... well... nothingness as far as I know. Outsiders do not have soul do they? I know that Elemental do not, they "merge" with their element as soon as they are destroyed.

The Nymph Ghost.

Careful with the Diplomacy checks and what you say exactly, she packs a punch.
Especially since the party is not prepared to fight a Ghost.

Next game.

Just to be sure: No "Nerd team" behaviour on Wednesday!
You are the image of EMRPGG, the image of "Vague Connections", the image of... BRITAIN!
Because if you do, you will get bleeding Put Fiend Sorcerers specialising in Phantasmal Killer spells until you are all sick of it! evil

Sir Marcus' first law of subtle and Machiavellian party leadership:
Never call for a party vote unless you're absolutely sure of being in the majority wink

Tea, bowler hats, some Roast Beef, Red Dwarf t-shirts, and cheesy wotsits for next week then...

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Dear Players,

It is with sadness that I need to inform you that Adam has decided to leave our group.mrgreen

People come, people go... this is life.
You may collect all his PC's loot, his banner and elect whomever you want to become the new aristocrat in charge of Fort Rannick.

This is my first post sorry about thatredface Im not online a lot and computers are a bit scary to meloljust a thought but if Sharax does ressurect
Avaxial wont he be a bit annoyed that the othjer party members killed him?
OK best behaviour wednesdaysmile

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

James,

A warm welcome to the RotRL thread!

Avaxial would indeed be slightly miffed about having been zapped dead, which will prove quite funny for Sharax if he ever decide to bring him back!

This would not be your PC's responsibility, but that of Andrew's. smile

See you on Wednesday,

Laurent,

hey james nice of you to join us on the discusion about how to take over Laurant's fine adventure and derail it, into the plan of world domination!

Yes I am fully aware that it's going to be a pain in the ass.

Yes I am fully aware that he may be a little miffed about being killed anyway

and yes I will have to wait for ages and by then I will have probably forgotten :-D

Either way can't wait for the next adventure. Swords for everyone!!!! Which is scarily true, 6 characters, 2 long swords, 3 short swords a rapier and enough daggers to start our very own range of high quality kitchen knives...

A theme emerges... Pointy end, other man. Then question them.

Ding posts: 204 United Kingdom

Hi all,

Sadly I won't be able to make it to this wednesday's adventure as it's my birthday and I am going out for a meal and to see Back to the Future. If it's any compensation it was a really really tough call.

Pacu really wants to grapple and trip some people but since I think we're fighting ogres/trolls/giants he may have to wait.

Ding

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

David,

Sorry to hear that, I mean becoming a year older AND missing an RPG session, life sucks!surprised

As for Pacu, I have repeatedly said "Giant, giants, giants..." so I am afraid a grappling Monk will have some difficulties indeed. I do not really check the PC sheets, I only collect them, but you are free so rejig your feats if you want.

Laurent,

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

"Great Scott!" Happy birthday!

In your absence, we'll get Pacu to grapple the Nymph.... what can possibly go wrong?

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Adam,

Grappling "through" the nymph... that could certainly go wrong! wink

Unless Pacu has a "Ghost touch grappling suppacool" feat I am not aware of?mrgreen

Oh yes, and "Happy Birthday" too.

Laurent,

Ding posts: 204 United Kingdom

Cheers. I'll have a look through the feats again and pick something more useful.

I've really no idea why anyone feels the need to carry on this argument in our game thread.

I really couldn't care less about the drama.... I'm not interested, I've met virtually no-one involved. I just want to play (and run) some games. Presumably that's what everyone else wants. If relations between certain people or certain groups are such that they don't want to play games together, then fine, don't. The important thing is that everyone enjoys their gaming. I suspect a measure of all this is probably due to the problem of communication via a written form, and people have e-falling outs they probably wouldn't have in person. But as I said, I'm not interested, and I doubt many people here are. Take it elsewhere.

Back on topic:
I thought a monk wrestling a giant would be cool. Enlarge person, anyone?

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Adam,

I utterly forbid you to take ideas from Nick's "Kingmaker" game to my "Rise of the Runelords" one! biggrin

This is unfair on the GMs, I mean what is next?
Phantasmal Killer being used in his game.

Laurent,

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Dear Players,

The game is on tonight, we should finished the current adventure. Then I guess we go for a "level check" exercise, ensuring you all have enough money for your level (minus the raise dead expenses of late). The start of the next adventure should be a big battle, so it is unlikely to be played tonight.

If things go too quickly, I am thinking of adding a not-so-random encounter on the way back from Fort Rannick to Sandpoint. Yep, Sir Marcus will need to employ the services of a castellan.

Only David and Ian signed in so far. I might bring "Cuba" or "Pandemic" with me just in case.

Laurent,

I would sign in but there is little point as i'm here already :P
