Dear Members,

Introduction.

This thread is dedicated to D&D/Pathfinder RPG games being run at Vague Connections in Nottingham.

Gaming group.

The composition of our gaming-group has been both constant and dedicated for a while now, but we welcome newcomers who are invited to check on the availability of games every now and again.

Game sessions and frequency.

In the past this was a Saturday afternoon gaming session but it is currently set on Thursday nights on a fortnightly basis.

Current game.

you know the cannon ball machine gun was AWESOME! and you secretly want it used time and time again. the look on you face when you found out was worth the single use that i am going to get out of it though.
15* 16lb cold iron cannon balls + small bag of holding + Telekinesis = one surprised looking GM ( eek ) and smooshed monster
priceless biggrin

Dear Players,

One more session?

It seems that the party has now collected the necessary elements and made a pretty good interpretation of the three stanzas found on the cuckoo-clock.
At two to three encounters per session so far, we should be able to finish the adventure on March 19th.

I was saddened by the fact that you missed the obvious "All your bases are belong to us" pun. Adam would surely have picked that one up.

Absence of threat.

The adventure reads as challenging and is also commented upon as TPK galore on the Paizo website, but as we have all realised, using optimised PCs (even purely within the rules) leads to a total lack of challenge at high level. This is ironic of course as we all expected, players and GM alike, that the fights would be more brutal at high-level.
As discussed, if this adventure had been played with "organic" PCs, built-up from first or at least mid-level to high-level through surviving an Adventure Path for instance, things might just have been a little more challenging.

Were I to run this again, I would indeed impose:

  • 17th LV Commoners or Experts only.
  • 11, 11, 11, 10, 10, 10 array of 1st LV statistics.
  • "The masterwork dagger given down the family from that great-grandfather of yours who once helped the local sheriff kill a Dire Rat with."
  • "One phial of that draught from Old Breggia who leaves at the edge of the forest" (1D8+5 maximised cure light wound potion.
  • Two silver and three copper coins for rations.

The game page has been updated.
The next calendar event has also been posted and is ready for you to sign-up to.

Sorry folks, I don't think I'm going to be able to make this one either. Someone can play my character or you can have him walk of the edge of a cliff (believing that no fight is a challenge anymore and wanting to see if gravity is an enemy he can be bested by). Once he lands safely at the bottom (ring of feather fall) have him break down in tears and realise that his life is completely insignificant and everything he did was a complete waste of time, as relatively to the universe and time he is nothing. Then the artic bee he has been looking for will land on his tear soaked hand and he'll feel slightly better and settle down as a bee keeper, selling his rare frozen honey sticks.

This may also make your last few encounters a bit more interesting.

Dear Players,

With David and Ian not able to make the next game, I have cancelled it.
Tomorrow I will arrange a rescheduling of the event at Vague Connections before leaving for the Big Meet in Derby.

Dear Players,

I have postponed our next installment of The Witchwar Legacy by a week.
We had two players who could not make it, thus triggering the "cannot play" clause.

Please check yourselves in for March 26th.

I know that I cannot do the 26th. I'm down in London village that weekend.

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Nick,

All right, one down, it someone else drops out I shall postpone it again. sad

Dear Players,

Dear players,

The end of the adventure

We have at last finished the game!
As we have all realised, high level adventures tend to be easier for the party than low-level ones when the PC are built at high-level. This was an experiment, I would rather run something around LV5-6, which is what I believe is the best level to run a game at. PCs have enough HPs, the classes begin to give some personality to a PC. Also, the magic is not too complex, AC and attack bonuses are not stupidly high and the icosahedron rolls still dictate the result; in the sense that there is no "I always hit if I do not roll a 1" statements to be made.

Ideally this kind of adventure would indeed be run after a typical Adventure Path after which the PCs end up at LV15-16, so only a couple of levels would need to be added. As we also discussed, this means that some odds and sods of standard D&D would have been collected: magic items that are valuable but not always useful, thus unlikely to be present on an optimised LV17 PC.

That being said, we all wanted to know how it felt to play with all those spells and what these +5 adamantine vorpal hit-everything-never-fail-except-on-a-one weapons of doom could do. smile
As for high-level monsters for the GM, well, they felt like Goblin canon-fodder when facing the optimised PCs. The limiting factors are the game mechanics linked to the number of actions per round. At high level, it does not matter how tough or powerful the monster actions are (spell or "special") the party's four (or six for six players) actions per turn against the monster's lone action per turn (or multiple thereof for everybody when haste and like abilities or effects are active) just lead to too much power disparity.
True, the monsters have access to more "save or die" powers, but they still need an action to get them through.

Saturday games

I am not going to start anything for the next couple of Saturdays.
After that, it will depend on arrangements to be made, but I would rather not promise anything regular on Saturdays anymore. I might volunteer to run a Pathfinder Society Session every now and then.

The game page has been updated for the last time.

If people are interested I could on a Saturday (or Sunday) run a new AP. Separate to Kingmaker.. when I have a chance to restart that

I have picked up the first in the Carrion Crown AP, and I'm having fun reading it and wouldn't mind giving it a go of running.

Dear members,

Time to re-activate this thread.

The Godsmouth Heresy

Hi,

I've already got two new players signed up for the game (Jules and Amy). I'll try to get them both active on this site. Both these players are new to Pathfinder RPG and RPGs in general.

I also believe Laurent is interested in playing?

So there's still space for a couple more if any one else is interested?

Ding

ian_t posts: 149 United Kingdom

i have signed in for it ding, so that will give you another experienced player and i am sure ginga will play too. so thats a group of 5

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Yes, I am in.

I have also altered the "organised by" entry on the calendar entry.

Laurent,

Ding posts: 204 United Kingdom

Hi all,

I'm questioning whether or not to run this session as Jules has had to cancel. Ideally I'd like to have everyone there for at least the first session in the module, especially where this concerns one of the newbies.

On the other hand, I don't want to end up perpetually cancelling because one of the group can't make it.

Perhaps in this case (the first session with two new players) it would be wise to cancel. I can then have a little more time to read the adventure more thoroughly. I can decide on the stat system etc and generate characters with Jules and Amy beforehand, let you know what they have picked and you can select and build characters accordingly. I think they are currently thinking, rogue and ranger but I will confirm.

As a rule of thumb in the future, we'll play with a minimum of three.

See you tonight for Rise of the Runelords

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

David,

Game or no game.

If you decide to run, you should have more than three players anyway:

  • Your friend Amy.
  • Ian.
  • My humble self.

And most likely Andrew if need be.

You run the game so you decide in the end though.

Board-game session.

We could advertise a board-game session on the calendar for tomorrow night.

Laurent,

Ding posts: 204 United Kingdom

Hi,

I'm free this evening between 5 and ~7.15 if anyone is about to play boardgames/card games then instead of the original Pathfinder session?

Ding

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

I have cancelled your game and set-up a board-game event on the calendar for the usual time of 6.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m.

Laurent,

Ding posts: 204 United Kingdom

Thanks Laurent, I'll be staying round a bit longer than I originally stated.

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

David,

I have posted the game for October 6th.
Can you edit the event to say how many players you expect or want?
Same thing for the game page.

Laurent,
