BSG? Doh.... DS9... some sci-fi acronym, anyway. I don't know why I said 'BSG'. I have seen BSG, and it's excellent (on average - I think it's very patchy, but when it's good.... it's great).

I'm sure we can keep the ranger mostly at range. Is that minus 1 thing from a fumble card? That's very nasty indeed. I've not seen that before.

In the meantime, I have a theory. The 'Legacy of Fire' is merely the smouldering remains of the fortune teller's caravan. Had we allowed an innocent man to be executed, that would have kicked off a dire vengeance and vendetta plot line that would have resulted in the deaths of everyone. As it is, justice prevails, and we'll all live happily ever after.

I'm sure of it.

ian_t posts: 149 United Kingdom

yup from a fumble card. -1 on all attack rolls until either 3days pass in game time or confirms a crit which ever comes first. am thinking poss the 3days as your all Lvl 1

Appologies I'm not going to be able to make it this evening.

Will be about for Friday

ian_t posts: 149 United Kingdom

for the missing players:
since 3 were missing and 4 were there the 3 missing were benched (yes ding this means your ranger had no oppertunity to regain his confidence, though we have ruled the barbarian and the wizard have been giving you a good talking to biggrin)
the rest of the monastery has been cleared for critters and the rest of the caravan has turned up and stated moving in. the cleric had some devine inspiration and went scrabbling in the dirt coming away with a SHINEY weapon that he is claiming he was destined to weild. other loot was found and now in the party kitty. see peeps there wednesday

Ding posts: 204 United Kingdom

So has the talking to sorted Arkah's confidence problem?

See you at the game on wednesday.

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Well, sometimes the best thing to do with an adventurer who's lost his confidence is to bench him for a week and give him time to find his form. Failing that, hopefully a training montage and some 'Eye of the Tiger' should see the Ranger right.

Ding posts: 204 United Kingdom

Only makes sense if it's played with musical instruments available to the pathfinders. Taking retro to its logical conclusion.

ian_t posts: 149 United Kingdom

ok just for laurent as he was the only player missing. the group has settled in to the monastary and has started scouting the outskirts of kelamarne. a small run in with a gnoll patrol and some giant snakes but all ok even the ranger is feeling more confident now. with one of the mercanaries stepping up to join the adventurers (as its better paid) the group definatly has all based covered. the bard seems to have taken over leadership and is getting people to do as she wishes by batting her eyelids lol and has lead the group off towards the town across the pesh fields north of the monastary and with a former pesh addict in the group what could go wrong? as for watching and getting good intel on the town from the vantage point in the monastary well that has not happened yet an probably never will now. after all as they say the plans of mice and men...

Fellow players and GM,

Ta Dah...! I should be back tonight.

Now that I am married, I need to beat up the wife and shout "Better cook something when I am back from playing or else!" before I leave for the game.
Well, I could try anyway. wink

I have just been through all the posts and am indeed surprised that the "Your PC died horribly" habit has not been taken up for LoF. Fear not my friends, we shall keep it alive for RotRL. exclaim

I will now have a look at the Kingmaker thread.

Laurent,

Appologies in advance.

Works been playing up so not sure if im going to be able to make it this evening.

Going on my (current) attendance of the game I'm only makeing every other game, which is annoying. (grr).
Once I'd thought I was able to make the wednesday games again life has choseing to throw spanners in the works sad

As I cannot reliably commit to games on Wednesday, I'm going to have to pull out for the foreseeable future.

Will be running Kingmaker on Friday however.

ian_t posts: 149 United Kingdom

leagacy of fire will be run tonight instaed of runelords due to reasons that are not for the website. explainations will be given later if required

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Fellow players and GM,

I am back and with my lady at work in London this week, I can sneak out for a Wednesday game.

I will talk with Ian about playing RotRL next week and then at long last start the "every other week" plan.

Laurent,

Fellow LoF players,

Session

I think we got pretty close to "one encounter too many", especially considering the statistical distribution of my dice rolls. Makoa was always one of the first to play, thanks to three 17s (for a total of 19) for each of the three encounter initiative rolls. Then, as you may have noticed rolling consistently below 5 made sure that even a PC built to hit and damage (and die quickly) became pretty ineffective. exclaim

Once we manage to cash in some of the equipment, I shall be begging for something to help Makoa’s AC. If he rages and charges at the same time (arguably for a sweet bonus to hit and a staggering amount of minimum damage for his level) his AC drops to 11 (15 base – 2 rage – 2 charge). His back-story, alignment and overall personality push him to rush into combat and “break some skulls”. Maybe one protection from evil/chaos spell instead of the need for a lot more of CLWs could be considered. I will discuss it with Adam. Protection from Chaos would make things a little less generic (most monsters are evil) and closer to the Abadaran faith (spell from the Law domain). Gnolls tend to be CE.

The "door that cannot be opened" in the old church is typical Paizo rail-roading by the way. This is an example of clever masquerading of "Nope... Cannot go this way at your current level". We encountered a variant of the Arcane lock spell that cannot be countered by Knock or any other spell available at LV2-LV3... yeah right! cool

We could try to piss off our GM by asking:

  • Can we use gunpowder?
  • Can we start digging?
  • Can we use a hammer and chip at the door for a day or two?
  • Can we use Dashki's head as a ram to open the door?

Behind this door are the ashes of a Pit Fiend with a scroll of True Resurrection just nearby. biggrin

Party

Could we get the name of the party members and their corresponding class posted on the game page?

Laurent,

ian_t posts: 149 United Kingdom

I will up date the game page soon with the parties details on just for you Laurent. As for the other points
gunpowder - yes but you have to make it yourself I will assign an arbatory number to the dc and if you fail by too much you may blow yourself and any one else up.
digging - yes you could but do you have any equipment for this? plus if you are doing this who is watching your back?
chipping away - see above comments
dashki battering ram - yes you can but I would require alignment changes to characters to EVIL for those who participates.
As for whats behind the door the party has been told by undella the harpy that the genie that is in control went in and came out evil do you want to open that door just yet? Plus its easier to open the door with a key than wasting a spell on it, and who is casting said spell? the MIA wizard?

I'd be happy to become evil if it means i can cave in the useless numptys head... mrgreen

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Ian,

Why should we open the door?
Because... IT IS THERE!!! exclaim

The Genie was only a Genie (maybe Andrew rolled his saving throw for all we know). We are a band of merry adventurers, I am sure our Cleric or Witch Doctor can find a way of not "coming back eeeeevil". wink

Players in my RotRL game have refused lichdom and the aid of a Pit Fiend. Better give us a pet Pit Fiend now than a Genie later... you do not want to know about Makoa's wish, do you? twisted

Laurent,

I do not think the MIA Wizard even has Knock! (He is/was an evoker after all... why open the door when you can blow it to bits?)

Apologies for my lack of turning up. Wednesdays are appearing to be working out not amicable for gaming for me I'm afraid, and I do not foresee this changing soon. frown

Think it would be best to side line my character for the time being, as at best my attendance on Wednesdays will be sporadic.

Adam posts: 137 United Kingdom

Maybe one protection from evil/chaos spell instead of the need for a lot more of CLWs could be considered. I will discuss it with Adam. Protection from Chaos would make things a little less generic (most monsters are evil) and closer to the Abadaran faith (spell from the Law domain).

2nd to 3rd is a big step change in Cleric-land. Tariq's channelling is now twice as (in)effective (2d6, rather than 1d6), and he now has 2 whole second level spells. One is usually going to be Bull's Strength (for Shari - +2 hit and damage on 2 attacks per round is better than on 1 attack for the bar-bar...). The other one I'm not sure about yet - another Bull, or based on what I think we might be facing. I quite like 'Calm Emotions'.

In terms of boosting AC, Tariq has three options. He has the option of 'Protection from Chaos' as a domain spell, and 'Shield of Faith' as a level 1 spell. SoF is a +2 deflection bonus to AC without reference to alignment of the enemy, but with no saving throw bonuses or other goodies. So far he's used it to boost AC on those who already have high AC - himself, and Shari. Though I guess there's no reason for thinking that a lower AC character (like a barbarian) wouldn't be equally likely to benefit - especially if he's getting attacked a lot.

The third option is the 'Bane' spell: -1 to hit to any enemies within 50' burst, so effectively +1 AC to all allies. A Will save negates, though. I've had this memorised a few times, but haven't used it yet. I think this used to be limited to Evil-aligned clerics only, but I don't see any such limitation now.

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Adam,

Low AC

To be fair, I knew from day one that a Barbarian is designed to be hit a lot. Makoa cannot cover everything. He is a damage sponge though, at LV3, the HP total is in the mid-40s. I am planning to add 1 to that CON 17 score at LV4 to gain an additional 4 HP retrospectively.

It is just that as pointed out, an effective AC of 11 for a round after a raging charge is definitely asking for trouble from an appropriate CR monster. I could powergame on the AC issue in a couple of levels (thus more wealth) but I have chosen not to.

Basically a "Breaker" loses the 10ft speed boost at 1st level, thus negating the whole indirect "light armour only" restriction associated with Barbarians: Makoa can only move 30ft but will always move 30ft. Technically, nothing forbids him to wear a full plate +5 of mighty avoiding and put his AC to stratospheric levels.

So, Makoa shall limit himself to light armour. I doubt mithral to be in large supplies in Katapesh, so the trick of all-mithral gear to lower the armour type will not apply.
Ergo: unless protected by spell effect his AC is going to be crap until Makoa can afford some magical armour, rings and amulets.

Strength boost

I agree that if we have a two-weapon fighter, it is best to give the +1 to hit bonus twice. To be honest, Makoa does not need more strength (he should hit far more than he is currently doing assuming a Gaussian distribution for the die rolls).

Makoa would not say no to a CON boost though. This way he would start each fight with an amount of HP comparable to that of CR equivalent monsters... which is quite a feat!

Evil spells

Very few spells are evil (or good) when one looks at it.
Healing and resurrection spells are not good although they sound as if they are.
Bane and other moral effect spells are not necessarily evil either.

Third Edition (before 3.5) had "emotion" spells, I preferred that wording, but that got canned with 3.5 for the sake of simplification.

Bane is indeed a good idea for multiple targets but as you have said there is the saving throw issue. Clerics generally do not take Spell Focus and in your case this does not really suit your Abadaran faith. Callistria or other deceiving/charm/illusion related deities could do something to help their spell saves DC on morale and mind affecting spells I guess.

Protection vs. Chaos could suit Makoa indeed, the bonus on saves against domination effect stacks with the increased will save from rage... you all want the Barbarian to resist mind affecting/domination effects, don't you?
Domain spells are not switchable thus feel cheaper to use.

Laurent,
