The East Midlands Roleplayers Gaming Group (Formerly The East Midlands Roleplayers Meetup Group) has a new home.
Welcome to our new home. I hope you will find it as comfortable as the old home, if not at least in time even more comfortable and useful in providing a means to find your gaming fun.

Welcome back to the group Ham.
I know you are looking for players, which is often something that will attract folks, so don't be shy, post a greeting and also let us know what you have on offer. There may well be new folks you never met. You never know, you might end up with a quick response.

Welcome back Bruce. (The original Bruce) Many of you will not remember Bruce, but he's been associated with the group almost as long as I have. (Back in the pre-independence days.)

Its good to see the old faces reappear. Welcome back to the group Bruce. Its good to have you on board.

Thanks Len!

I wasn't suprised to find you've moved on from Meetup when I dropped in to catch up this morning.

Just a few words to (re)introduce myself. I joined the group shortly after it was formed having had my schoolboy interest in tabletop RPGs rekindled by the computer driven variety. I enjoyed some of the earlier monthly games in Derby until work got in the way of regular weekend stuff. I was also part of the original Burton gang (as that was where I lived at the time) and enjoyed many superb Serenity sessions at the Cooper's with Jim and Co. When I moved away from Burton other projects took priority including a rather bonkers charity project which reawakened my interest in music and raised over £2000 for a well known Cancer charity. I now play bass guitar witha pub rock covers band. I also run and am working up to a couple of half marathons this year.

I live in Loughborough in Leicestershire with my wife Jilly (we married in October) and having a little more free time would like to look at getting involved with gaming again.

Cheers,

Bruce

P.S. You can find me on facebook.com/brucecunnington and twitter.com/notsoninja

Loughborough huh?
Well, I shall have to have words with Ben this afternoon. (You may remember Ben as the young feller with the red hat who played American football) He is now almost family. wink

He is running a 4e game which was running at the Jack O'Lantern and will probably be there again when we get the new landlord/landlady in contact. There was a bit of a trip-up when the previous incumbents left without saying anything and we found the place closed one night.

Len

Bruce_C posts: 180 United Kingdom

Thanks Len,

I remember Ben well from the Burton Serenity game. I'll have to read up on 4e, I'm out of touch but don't imagine too much has changed.

EDIT: I should probably start a new thread to ask foolish nooblike questions but whats the best plan from here? Do I get the 4e PHB? A quick google hasn't helped me locate any kind of 4e SRD? The starters pack appeals for a tenner too, though mostly because the artwork and box are almost the same as the set that got me sucked in twenty something years ago

Cheers,

Bruce

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Well, you won't really find a 4e SRD, because Wizards got a bit crafty, and didn't use the same kind of license for 4e that they did for 3/3.5. They decided to make some money out of everything 4e, no matter whose work it is.

There is a kind of 3.75-ish version called Pathfinder, that is almost 3.5 compatible, and to make matters a little more cloudy, there is the newer 4e Essentials rules which are not the same as the 4e rules (but are not 4.5 honest guv.)

The version wars are currently in a kind of non-aggression-treaty. Occasionally someone sticks up for whatever version they happen to favour. Laurent is the Pathfinder Frenchman, who likes to stir things, but we all know he's French, so we never take him seriously. He's harmless really provided you realise he even takes the P*^& out of the French. Then there is me, who plays 4e, DMs 3.5, plays with Laurent as a GM, so its sort of Pathfinder, and I can't be arsed to fight in anyone's wars. I'd say get yourself a 4e PHB if you like, but as always, there will be books you can borrow.

Version wars are always bubbling under the surface, and there will always be people that take things personally. Nothing new there. As long as someone doesn't insult your brew you probably won't mind.

You should really try the starter red box

if nothing else it is immense value for money.....i dont own it, as i dont play 4e, but have rifled through someone elses. There is a lot for your pennies!

Bruce,

Welcome "back" (you left before I joined) to the group then.
We need people to show-up at the Big Meet and from your history you seem to be aware of the importance of the monthly gathering. Hopefully we shall meet there and then at some point.

Len

You know perfectly well that the Pathfinder RPG, which is indeed "3.75"ish, is fully compatible with D&D 3.5. So do not say "sort of".

You are a *&##!!! who plays that &*+\## "4e" game! I hate you, you are $%%&*@# and I hope you $#@@*!* and &=##?*.
biggrin

  • &##!!! is French for @/%\*^

&*+\## means @>*&?$
And $%%&*@#, $#@@*!* and &=##?* are self-explanatory.

John

Yep, I have heard it said too, the "Red Box" seems to be very good value for money... even (or especially?) if you do not play 4e! confused
By browsing quickly the EN-World forums, one might realise that the rules of the "Red Box" are not exactly "4e Essentials", even if the product itself was meant as an introduction to 4e Essentials. Some have written that the Red Box is in fact a re-introduction to 4e for those who had never touched it.

Laurent,

I'm confused with all this talk about editions of the wrong game.razz

edit: and oh yeah, welcome back chap! Always glad to see another person coming back to the hobby.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

4e is not a bra size Alan.

Again, you may be failing to keep work and non-work interests separate.

Len

Bruce_C posts: 180 United Kingdom

Thanks guys, 'tis my burfday before the next 'big meet' (which I hope to attend) so will hopefully have a shiny red box shaped gift.

I will also take a look at the 4e core books. In this day and age it's a shame they are not available (legitimately) in a digital/ebook form.

How many folk are you attracting to the monthly meets at the moment?

I hope the beer at the Brunswick still as good as I remember!

Bruce

Mik posts: 48 United Kingdom

Welcome back Bruce.

There is a download on the wizards website (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/TryDnD.aspx) about half way down the page which gives you what was in the blue 4e starter box. (basic rules intro

The new Red Box is a good intro to Essentials-ish but only to 1-3 level, after that you need the Heroes of Fallen Lands/Forgotten Kingdoms etc and then have to re-jig a couple of powers which were simplified in the Red Box.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

The beer was as good the last time I was able to make the meet as you remember.
We have stumbled a bit on attendance, largely because of mass outbreaks of the pig-lurgy in Jan and we'd have been a bet better of last week If I had been up to it. I have taken a bit of a hit to the old stats recently. I don't remember triggering a trap or anyone casting on me, but I have certainly taken 1D6 CON damage, and unfortunately, it appears it is the permanent kind. If I ever had a save, the DM took it for me behind the screen. evil

However, we are looking to revive the monthly event with some help from all sides.

Hi there!

I'm new to table-top RPGs - I only started last May (2010). I'd enjoyed the "Lord of the Rings" films, and Terry Pratchett's Discworld. I'd been reading Wil Wheaton's blog (of "Stand by me", "Star Trek: The Next Generation", and Secretary of Geek Affairs fame) - and one of his interests is RPGs. I also listened to and watched some D&D podcasts of 4th edition games. This led me to search the web for any games near to me.

I've just registered here, but I was briefly on the old meetup.com site last year (2010). Through the old site, I found my first ever game - a 3.5e D&D adventure involving the party doing a lot of investigating, brawling in Inns, pissing each other off, and taking their time to make any sort of progress. It was fun! biggrin

Some of the group I started with have since left, and some new members have joined. We now meet on a Wednesday evening at my flat on Fosse Road Central in Leicester. I couldn't cope with GMing, so we now alternate between two games GMed by different people - one 3.5e set in a city that has outlawed magic in which the party have just started out in the Watch, and another (yet to start) Modern 3.5e rules-lite set a few years in the future in a newly founded enclosed eco-system city.

The people I game with are very familiar with 3.5e rules, so understandably don't want to play 4th edition. However, I'd like to try 4e. From what I've seen of it on podcasts, it seems a lot easier to pick up, and it's easier to play it without worrying about the rules. (The basics are very short, and then every variation is a particular exception to the basics.)

I enjoy the narrative much more than the mechanics or rules, so would also like to play in a game with this emphasis.

I've heard of "Spirit of the Century", which is supposed to be more story focussed, so would like to try this out too.

Due to long-term illness, I'd need the travelling to be kept to a minimum, and am also free daytimes as well as evenings and weekends.

All the best,
Martin

Bruce_C posts: 180 United Kingdom

Welcome aboard Martin!

I'm looking forward to trying some 4e sometime soon too!

More new members. Welcome Tony, you are just in time for the monthly Big Meet, and just in case I missed any, welcome all new members.

Hello everyone

I once played quite a lot of D&D, MERP and quite a few others that briefly flourished back in the glory days. But I am ashamed to that I havent really involved myself in anything much beyond the complexity of monopoly since. redface

I was retro-gaming on my laptop recently due to an extremely underwhelming graphics card and happened upon the THAC0-tastic Baldur's Gate 2, which I'm sure you will all know tries its best to follow the AD&D 2E rules. A gripping game and lots of fun, especially in multiplayer if anyone is interested in such things.

Anyway, traipsing around a pixelated Athkatla seems to have stirred something within, so to speak, and I found myself wondering if there were any RPG groups in the area and hence I stumbled upon this place.

So, greetings to you, East Midlands RPG-ers! I am a somewhat rusty player, who's most recent rulebook dates from 1989, with a penchant for clerics (do they still have those?) and LE13 postcode. I am looking to find out a bit more about your fabulous group here, with a view to joining a game in either the Melton Mowbray or Leicester Area.

I read that you meet up once a month at a pub, but not quite sure where this is or what time it would be best to rock up. Does one wear a carnation or maybe a hat at a jaunty angle to identify oneself as a possible new recruit? (or is it very very obvious??)

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

The Brunswick near the Derby train station on the second Saturday starting at 1pm, and you are almost bound to recognise the RPG playing folks. If not, ask behind the bar, because we have met there for five years.
Wear a carnation if you really must, but I warn you, unless it is your holy symbol, you will look out of place amongst the blokes. If there are flowers, it might just be one of the girls wearing them. We do have a reasonable smattering of female players (and even DMs).

Its usually the dice and/or books that give us away.
