It's all part of the big society. If you want to invade somewhere, or resist an invasion somewhere, or stop a civil war, or prevent a massacre, it's no good waiting for the nanny state to do everything for you. These days there's no role for the state in defence, peacekeeping, or armed conflict. So why not volunteer... your country (or someone else's country) needs you....

From George Orwell and the International Brigades in Spain to Mark Thatcher in Equatorial Guinea, there's a great (and not so great) British tradition of this kind of thing....
