Introducing myself

Hi there!

I'm new to table-top RPGs - I only started last May (2010). I'd enjoyed the "Lord of the Rings" films, and Terry Pratchett's Discworld. I'd been reading Wil Wheaton's blog (of "Stand by me", "Star Trek: The Next Generation", and Secretary of Geek Affairs fame) - and one of his interests is RPGs. I also listened to and watched some D&D podcasts of 4th edition games. This led me to search the web for any games near to me.

I've just registered here, but I was briefly on the old meetup.com site last year (2010). Through the old site, I found my first ever game - a 3.5e D&D adventure involving the party doing a lot of investigating, brawling in Inns, pissing each other off, and taking their time to make any sort of progress. It was fun! biggrin

Some of the group I started with have since left, and some new members have joined. We now meet on a Wednesday evening at my flat on Fosse Road Central in Leicester. I couldn't cope with GMing, so we now alternate between two games GMed by different people - one 3.5e set in a city that has outlawed magic in which the party have just started out in the Watch, and another (yet to start) Modern 3.5e rules-lite set a few years in the future in a newly founded enclosed eco-system city.

The people I game with are very familiar with 3.5e rules, so understandably don't want to play 4th edition. However, I'd like to try 4e. From what I've seen of it on podcasts, it seems a lot easier to pick up, and it's easier to play it without worrying about the rules. (The basics are very short, and then every variation is a particular exception to the basics.)

I enjoy the narrative much more than the mechanics or rules, so would also like to play in a game with this emphasis.

I've heard of "Spirit of the Century", which is supposed to be more story focussed, so would like to try this out too.

Due to long-term illness, I'd need the travelling to be kept to a minimum, and am also free daytimes as well as evenings and weekends.

All the best,
Martin
