Well, you won't really find a 4e SRD, because Wizards got a bit crafty, and didn't use the same kind of license for 4e that they did for 3/3.5. They decided to make some money out of everything 4e, no matter whose work it is.

There is a kind of 3.75-ish version called Pathfinder, that is almost 3.5 compatible, and to make matters a little more cloudy, there is the newer 4e Essentials rules which are not the same as the 4e rules (but are not 4.5 honest guv.)

The version wars are currently in a kind of non-aggression-treaty. Occasionally someone sticks up for whatever version they happen to favour. Laurent is the Pathfinder Frenchman, who likes to stir things, but we all know he's French, so we never take him seriously. He's harmless really provided you realise he even takes the P*^& out of the French. Then there is me, who plays 4e, DMs 3.5, plays with Laurent as a GM, so its sort of Pathfinder, and I can't be arsed to fight in anyone's wars. I'd say get yourself a 4e PHB if you like, but as always, there will be books you can borrow.

Version wars are always bubbling under the surface, and there will always be people that take things personally. Nothing new there. As long as someone doesn't insult your brew you probably won't mind.
