That was a tense finish all right! Those things hit hard....
We could have done better.... but with new players/characters it's always tough to integrate. We need to think about that, and in particular about melee tactics - I'm not sure we have the balance right at the moment.... but we have two more regulars characters to come....
On the subject of "party leader"... this is a bit of a new concept for me because most of the games I've played haven't had one, unless there's some in-game reason (nobility, rank, or position etc). Generally I'm more used to leaders "emerging" over time. I'm happy to have Marcus as notional party leader as the "oldest" still living PC, but my style won't typically be giving orders or making decisions by myself... that's not my preferred leadership style in real life and it's certainly not in game. I'll be having ideas and making suggestions for plans, same as before the recent demises, but don't expect Marcus to start dictating tactics any time soon.... it's not in his (CN) nature.
