Recruiting for a 'Short' Armagada campaign

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

There has developed a small opening in the Leicester area schedule. I propose to fill it. Leah is not yet ready to replace 'Beholder', and the Armagada campaign is on a temporary hiatus. The new campaign will be a 'short' campaign, but not necessarily in the duration sense.wink

The reason I call it a short campaign is that it will be restricted to characters from two races only. Halflings, or Gnomes. Your choice of class from the 3.5 PHB starting at level one. Your choice of Halfling or Gnome, but roughly equal proportions would be nice for reasons that may never become apparent.

To make matters worse, you should know that in the part of my world where this takes place, Halflings and Gnomes do not get on particularly well. Each race has its legends about the reasons. The Halflings blame the Gnomes, and the Gnomes blame the Halflings. each believes that the races used to work well together in the distant past, but that there was some kind of falling out. in the dim and distant past, whose exact cause seems a mystery.

No one has any valid reason why they distrust each other, and there are even quiet instances of friendships between the races. These friendships are frowned upon by groups of Halflings or Gnomes, but individually it is sometimes different.

Imagine the childish attitude that all red headed kids are freaks and smell funny, apart from you Jimmy, you are different. You are my friend. However I might have to say you smell if my mates are around, 'cos they don't know you like I do. That is what it's like in this community among the adults.

There are quite a few humans, a smaller number of dwarves and elves around, but PCs will all be either Halfling or Gnome, and will like the other PCs whatever their race. (Except when others are around, when they might pretend not to like each other, cos it wouldn't do to get a reputation as a Halfling-lover or Gnome-lover.)

You will not be staying in your own community long, and there will be no openly hostile inter-party actions. You all secretly like each other. Its the rest that smell/steal/eat babies/wet the bed/look funny.

The game days/times/venue is yet to be set in stone, but it will probably be Tuesday Evenings alternate weeks at my place. 'cos I have a games room. That will severely limit numbers and priority will be given to suitable folks who can commit to a regular schedule. Naturally, if you are averse to playing a Gnome or a Halfling, then this campaign will not be your cup of tea.

Why only Gnomes or Halflings? Because I said so. That is what the campaign needs. You should also be aware that I like s bit of backstory, and your backstory can and may well be used if its good and I get the chance. However this is my world, and backstories will have to comply with it, so they should be discussed with me individually before you get too carried away.

~Moderated~ (Moved to keep character discussions together.)
Barbarian Gnome or Halfling would be quite apt actually, as would just plain fighter. Throw away your preconceived ideas about those races. Think pygmy.

Look at the post for the game, and let me know if you need more info.

Great, Drogo Toe-chomper lives! wink

Will have a read through my books tonight and see what i can come up with.

You may have to give me a hand with a back story though, but that just means it will fit in better with your setting i suppose :-)

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Woohoo, excitementations, and all that 'short' of thing! wink

This distrust and hostility that no one seems to really know how it all started between the Halflings and Gnomes - Did anyone make a popular board game out of it..?
Just wondered...

Anyway. I've just been to Halflings R Us and it seems they have a deal on at the moment, for a nominal fee I might get Charlie Halflingised. Lose a few feet and the dancing (And therefore the associated Prestige class that meant he wouldn't actually be playable until about 5th level anyway), keep the harmonica and we're sorted!

Seeing as he was a member of a travelling acting troupe I expect copious opportunities to utilise the Disguise skill! santa That's erm... that's a Halfling disguised as Santa...

Oh and also cause I'm a bit of a cross-class junky (And I have thus far resisted the urge to bastardise Elessar, Carlton, and Astra in such a way) this Halfling'll likely be a Bard come Rogue cross breed.

So all in all, if it pleases your honour;

I present your first short character for your short campaign. Hopefully following shortly will be shorter characters, but in short... okay I've had enough of that.

I'll drop you his back-story if you like for your perusal, feel free to discuss, disagree, disallow, disparage, or disinfect anything you dislike.
By no means do I have to stick with this if it ain't not no good for you. Besides, the Gnome Superstore is just down the road, and it looks like they have a sale on too!

Oh also... how carried away is too carried away..?

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Charlie. I believe the current record for "carried away" is an 8000 word backstory with a seven page appendix indexing potential NPCs involved.lol And that was not in any game that I DM.

@ Rob. Which race is Drogo?

Apoc posts: 78

Halfling, I'll be converting and painting up a mini for him too :-)

Just because I can and because I like painting :-)

Apoc posts: 78

ok being new to this, what do i do about rolling for stats and such? in fact i have no idea what i am doing! lol rolleyes

Jaxtasha posts: 111

It was actually 8500+ words and I managed to complete reading it the other night...now it is being amended, my hope is it doesnt get longer as minor details are changed!! :-S

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Well, I am a fairly lenient guy, but you are a noob.biggrin I would honestly suggest you roll up a character using what is called the 4 drop 1 method. and also bring a blank sheet so you can try rolling up and assembling your character with the help of others the first time. Provided your rolls are believable, I would be willing to accept them.

4 drop 1 means that you roll 4 D6, and discard the lowest one, adding the other three up and write down the number. You repeat this six times until you have six numbers in the range 3 - 18. Then you allocate these numbers to the six stats in whatever order you want, and continue from there.

I know from the two other interested parties that they would be happy to offer good advice, and the DM might be able to remain impartial too after all these years. cool

Len

Apoc posts: 78

ok, i'll see how i go making my own and will leave the rolls until i get there if i can. I have a rough idea of what i want for him :-)

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

You will need to roll stats in order to work out all the things that depend on them.

I suggest you try your own, and see how you go. If you get stuck, then we'll work with you on the night. Don't sweat it if you can't get what you want, we can always take the time to help.

Len

Apoc posts: 78

I have had a play about with a builder programme and have got a sheet together, i can email it over for you to check if that will be easier?

I rolled my own dice (4d6 less the lowest dice) and got these:
16
13
18
8
15
17
for my stats and 4,4,4,5 for my starting gold. Are they ok? if not i am happy to re-roll on the day :-)

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

The starting gold rolls are D4 not D6. (Can't roll a 5 on a D4wink) Otherwise that's a very good set of numbers. A lucky Halfling Barbarian.

Len

Apoc posts: 78

Oops, read that wrong then but only used a few gp on equipment so will re-roll when i get home from work later.

they were good, but hppy to roll again if they are too high, rolled 4 d6 took away the lowest dice.

might be better if i build my character when i get there in case i make any more mistakes.

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

Hmmm, I'm intrigued by this pygmy-esque society of Halflings. It suggests Knowledge(Nobility), a fake ‘tache, and a butler's outfit would not be as useful as previously thought... confused
No bustling city life? No country manors full of the idle rich wishing to spend their money on highbrow entertainment while being blissfully unaware they’re also being robbed blind?

And I should have guessed it'd be Ash writing away like there's no tomorrow! Took me long enough to read her Armagada letters! wink but they were lovely letters though. biggrin

And as for mister Apoc, we're always glad to help, but you may be less glad once you've experienced some of the help, but oh well. I'll refrain from the general advice right now on the basis that very little that just floats into my head is of any real use to anyone, but feel free to fire question if you gots any, no matter how stupid they may seem, chances are I've asked a stupider one... that's a genuine word right?

Anyway, look forward to seeing you and your Barbarian on Tuesday. Not this Tuesday, but the following Tuesday right?

If we get two (three more at a push) more players in time, that is indeed the plan. Stuart/Charlie Gestalt.

Basic information for all players.

The campaign is set in Armagada in the very south of a land now called Arvel. Arvel is an Elf-ruled land, but towards the south it is not well governed. Its woodland has petered out to only the occasional area of sparse scrubby woodland. Agriculture is not the strongest card in the economy in this region. What agriculture there is tends to be cattle and sheep herding by semi-nomadic human and halfling tribes.
The land is not productive enough to produce plentiful crops for sale, so subsistence farming is the norm. Farmers grow crops for their own use, or to support fairly small towns and villages where several farmers will specialise in their own crop, and produce more than they can use, bartering or selling their excess in exchange for other products they do not grow or produce themselves.
Though there are some Gnome farmers, most farmers are Halfling or human. Conversely few Halflings produce crafted goods, this usually being the forte of Gnomes.
Some dozen years ago the ruling elf family changed the name of the country from Invar to Arvel. The reason was that the Ruling line passed from the Invars to the Arvels. Of little interest to any except the Royals, the change was apparently peaceful enough. The ruling Invar line died out to the point where the next in line was not an Invar, but an Arvel. Apart from the change of name, little appears to have changed in the country, and there are many die-hards who still ‘accidentally’ call the country Invar out of many hundreds of year’s ingrained habit.
In order to understand the land, think South America, well south of Rio de Janeiro. So basically where Argentina would be. The mountains in the west are not the the Andes, but The Spina Armagada. A range higher than the Andes, which runs almost without break from the icy wastes thousands of miles to the north into the frozen south; ending just a few hundred miles from the deadly sea strait that separates the land from the southern ice pack in summer. In winter, even this 50 mile gap is covered in thick ice.
The Spina Armagada forms a practically impenetrable barrier to travel in and East-West or West-East direction. North of Arvel is a land called Ayray, and North of Ayray is an area called The Devastation. This forms a total barrier to North-south travel on the Eastern side of The Spina Armagada. No one is known to have passed across The Devastation in the 700 years since it began. Many believe the land to the North was completely destroyed in the terrible catastrophe that caused The Devastation.

Across the practically non-existant and certainly porous border to the south, the land belongs to the barbarian tribes. (Barbarian PCs may even have originated there.) Travel is not restricted to the south, but in all honesty, the grass is marginally greener this side.

Apoc posts: 78

re-rolled with d4 this time :-D got 11 only spent 78 on gear so no problems with my build :-)

Charlie posts: 202 United Kingdom

... Ominous silence? I think Gnomes and Halflings are too small - they're too easily over looked by the big-folk round 'ere!

But it sounds like the Barbarian is pretty ready, and he's got coin left over! Right, first tavern we end up in the first round is on Rob! biggrin

Also if me Halfling Bard is too inappropriate for the setting, and as it's always good to have a back-up, I've put together a rather nimble Gnome Rogue who should slip very nicely into Invar Arvel. And cheers Len for the useful info.

Incidentally; do you think a medium sized quarterstaff would be suitable for some impromptu pole-vaulting for a Gnome..? Just wondered... wink

Anyway, who we waitin' on? Don't people know Halflings and Gnomes are the new 'in things'?

Apoc posts: 78

I have got the 3 halfling miniatures from Heresy Miniatures, will be using the barbarian but can paint up the other 2 if anyone wants to use them :-)

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

We are probably waiting on Leah. We know she's a busy girl, but we should allow her time to respond.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Now to whet the appetite of other readers.

Very occasionally adventurers, always halflings it appears, enter the land from the south with diamonds for sale. They do not tell where the diamonds come from, as naturally they wish to keep their source confidential. This is well known by the elves, humans and dwarves of Invar Arvel who will often come to town to find out if there have been any more diamonds brought in.

Now we all know that the saying is that big things sometimes come in small parcels. But none of you has any idea where the diamonds come from. But diamonds often feature in the oldest legends of the time when Gnomes and Halflings worked together. It is damned obvious to all but the most gullible that there is a little more to this than meets the eye.

Rumours of greedy people trying to find out about the diamonds usually end with a phrase something like "and then they found his body ...". However that has never stopped the occasional band of adventurers attempting to follow the adventurers when they leave. None of these bands of keen young adventurers has ever returned to show any diamonds for their trouble. In fact ... none has ever returned with diamonds, or even just their health ... or alive for that matter, ... or at all.
