The October Big Meet

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

Dear Members,

NB Please check the members forum for further important discussion on this Big meet!

Location change - the traditional location for the big meet is unavailable to us this month and it will be held in an alternate location. Location T.B.C. - likely Barley Mow in Leicester

This is the discussion thread for our October 2013 Big Meet.

Obviously, you need to have a look at:

The Social

The Afternoon Session

The Evening Session

You are:

A player.

  • Discuss the games on offer, what you need to prepare, anything really.
  • Ask kindly if someone else could run a game for you. Demand could create offer after all.

A GM

  • Describe the game you want to play here in addition to what is to be found on your game page.
  • Ask for advice on how to format your game page.
  • Ask the Organising Team member in charge of the event to put your game on the sign up page and linkify everything that needs be linkified, such as a particular game thread in the forum or your game page for instance. Members of the Organising Team should be able to modify the calendar event and tracker pages to include their own games, but I can do it for them too if need be.

A new member or a simple observer.

We do not bite, so post away.

And for all of the above, you can discuss transport issues here too.

This is the original post, people are invited to propose games as soon as possible to allow players some choice and time to make up their minds.

F.A.Q.?

There is a page of general information about The Big Meet yes.

Hint.

"No game, thus no play makes us pretty dull boys" (and girls), so do not be shy and run something!

Sticky.

This thread will remain as a "sticky" until the this Big Meet has passed, then it will become a normal thread again. After that, you will still be able to comment on the event, but entropy should ensure the thread's slow death and let the newer thread for the current Big Meet take centre stage.

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

Irrespective of what the calendar events may say the event is not at the Brunswick in Derby. It will probably be at the Barley Mow in Leicester, this will be confirmed shortly.

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

In other news - Lucee will probably not attend on this occasion and my own attendance is looking sketchy at best. Might know more closer to the time, not exactly ideal I know but you will be fine. You're big boys and girls quite capable of playing with yourselves without me there to organise. eek

I'll try and make my biannual(?) appearance to support the change of venue and maybe scratch my itch. I will bring dice, some badly painted miniatures and maybe (just maybe) an old skool game D&D game to run.

I'll not be able to make it until after 3pm, but I'm game.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

It will be unusual to be able to get a bus to the big meet.

Len

skerrigan posts: 142 United Kingdom

Hope you get one of the new posh wifi ones Len.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Whichever bus I get, it's now free. smile

Well if it's D&D/Pathfinder I hope your physical stats are all even so your modifiers don't change.

I'll be driving down from Derby. If anyone wants a lift, let me know. I've never been to Leicester city centre so I'll put my faith in the satnav gods.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

There is a pay & display car park just to the rear of the pub, but it's not an easy way in through the one way system. The Satnav gods may be related to Loki, beware. Most try to get you to turn left into Granby St from London Rd. Its been a while since that was possible.

Come into Leicester along the A50 (J20) as far as the inner ring road (A594) and turn left where you see the big mirror finish cinema/shops right across the road. (Can't miss it) Your Santav may say turn right there just to see you suffer.

Carry on along the ring road, following signs for the station until on St Georges way (A594), just after the Mercedes dealership on the left, where you see the Ibis Hotel on your right, the tall blue building in front and the Leicester Mercury Building on the right, get into the right lane before the lights.

Then across those lights stay in the right lane, turn right at the next lights onto Charles St, then left into Northampton St, Right on Granby St, (where you may notice the pub on the left) Left on Dover St and left into the car park.

Walk out the opposite side to where you entered the car park, turn right and the pub is on the corner.

If you feel really rich, you could even use the station car park. lol

Thanks Len :-)

Looks like we're confirmed for the Barley Mow then?

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

We are indeed. I had to be in town today (Briefing for Zombie Earth, more about that on a separate thread.) so I took the opportunity to pop in. I got to check out the newly re-done upstairs. Anyone who knew the old Barley Mow might remember there was a stairway in the middle of the pub that ate up lots of room both upstairs and downstairs. That is gone and only the side stairs exist now. It has made for more room, and also the upstairs, where we will be, is more isolated from the pub noise. The place was heaving today, downstairs, but upstairs was still quite workable for games. LOTS more space upstairs due to the removal of the stairs and balconies.

We are good to go for every month as far as they are concerned. We have a booking for the second Saturday of every month. The woman who used to help out at the Black Horse now runs it, and she is looking forward to seeing us regularly again. The Black Horse was where the Card and board games was run.

Sounds like you've got the whole thing sorted. I'm looking forward to seeing the new and improved Barley Mow then. Although I don't recall if the place does food? Think folk ought to acquire themselves a full stomach for lunch prior to rocking up at the pub?

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

As I discussed with Lethe the lass who runs the place when I first scouted out the location no they do not offer food at present. They are however quite happy for us to get food from elsewhere and eat in there. At least until such a time as they sort out serving food of their own. There are many options for food in easy walking distance on the same street so no one need go hungry. Maryland chicken despite looking really cheap and nasty is actually very tasty and very cheap. At least by my reckoning anyway.

The usual rules apply in terms of drink though - we are getting the place for free so long as we drink there - and I would be amazed if at least some snacks were not also available. So if we show the customary level of respect and leave the place reasonably tidy and pretty much as we found it and get our drinks in there I should think we'll have a long and welcoming future ahead of us at the mow.

If I make it and remember to do so I'll scout out a couple of parking options for the area and get current prices.

The only other caveat is some card game players - yugi-oh I think use the space often at weekends. I don't know if we will be sharing or not, I think not but if any of that lot show up and wonder what is going on be nice, share if needs be. And maybe try and recruit them cool.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

It always used to be MtG CCG people in the past. They were mostly harmless, but usually left a bit of mess. - Not a trait for us to mimic. There is also a Leicester SciFi group who used to use the Mow occasionally. I don't know if they'll be back though.

They started using the Barley Mow after their old shop/haunt closed down. Now that the Mow is back up and running they have probably also moved back in.

I think you'll find starbase leicester these days mostly haunt the phoenix - I'm guessing their numbers and organisation have grown.

Lucee posts: 9

I will be there for at least the afternoon, which means Alan will be there also.

skerrigan posts: 142 United Kingdom

I wasn't there (obviously). Fresher's flu finally claimed me last night after trying all week. But next month I won't have to work on a Saturday anyway, so yay!

Bruce_C posts: 180 United Kingdom

Thanks for your patience with a card game noob everyone. It was a very pleasant afternoon. I've bought the Bang! app/game so should have a better grasp if I play it again!

Cheers

Bruce
