The February 2013 Big Meet

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Dear Members,

This is the discussion thread for our February 2013 Big Meet.

Obviously, you need to have a look at:

The February 2013 Social

The Afternoon Session

The Evening Session

You are:

A player.

  • Discuss the games on offer, what you need to prepare, anything really.
  • Ask kindly if someone else could run a game for you. Demand could create offer after all.

A GM

  • Describe the game you want to play here in addition to what is to be found on your game page.
  • Ask for advice on how to format your game page.
  • Ask the Organising Team member in charge of the event to put your game on the sign up page and linkify everything that needs be linkified, such as a particular game thread in the forum or your game page for instance. Members of the Organising Team should be able to modify the calendar event and tracker pages to include their own games, but I can do it for them too if need be.

A new member or a simple observer.

We do not bite, so post away.

And for all of the above, you can discuss transport issues here too.

This is the original post, people are invited to propose games as soon as possible to allow players some choice and time to make up their minds.

F.A.Q.?

There is a page of general information about The Big Meet yes.

Hint.

"No game, thus no play makes us pretty dull boys" (and girls), so do not be shy and run something!

Sticky.

This thread will remain as a "sticky" until the February Big Meet has passed, then it will become a normal thread again. After that, you will still be able to comment on the event, but entropy should ensure the thread's slow death and let the newer thread for the current Big Meet take centre stage.

Recap of my game now dubbed "D&D: The Convicted". I of course will bring all relevant materials to continue if everyone wants to.

Intro
All players must be a criminal or have back story leading to them being arrested & convicted of a crime.

Be warned, the setting will be extremely harsh on magic users and will require some very good role playing.

Players started out on a ship bound for a prison city. The prison city is nestled deep a canyon. Surrounded by mountains with only one way in or out ... by sea. The tides and rocky waters make it almost impossible to get a ship into the harbour. It can only be accomplished at high-tide and even then the ship must sail a narrow pass between the rocks.

The city its self is built in layers.

The outer layer has

  • Docks
  • "Buildings" (No one bothered looking around too much on the way in)
  • A Keep
  • A Tower

Prisoners are kept in the inner layers with the nastiest kept deeper in, towards the mountain.

The prison city is covered by an anti-magic field. Given the duration and size of the field it's not 100% effective but any spell casting inside the field requires a will check. Difficulty is 15 + spell level. Failure consumes the spell with no effect. If a spell is targeted the target of the spell gets a saving throw modified to their benefit by the spells level.

The story so far
The players arrived on the island and were paraded in front of the warden. He gave a speech about how it's his island and if they behave they will be treated well. After the speech the prisoners were lead into "processing" where they were dusted for lice before being ushered inside the walls.

Upon entering the prison the players were immediately surrounded by a large crowd of inmates ... a Minotaur was brought in by a female human inmate and set loose on the new arrivals. The aim of this little "hazing" appeared to be to see which of the new arrivals can be trusted and which would sell out their fellow inmates for their own survival. Not all the new arrivals survived.

During the encounter with the Minotaur...

  • The Gnome-Cleric tried to play football with the severed head of another new arrival and got into a rather heated debate with the head about why it wouldn't move when she kicked it.
  • The human rogue tried to prostitute herself and very nearly got lucky.
  • The halfling ranger spent most of the encounter hanging from the Minotaur's skirt or belt, presumably providing some kind of distraction.

The only source of "official" food in the prison is by way of a chute operated by the guards at midday. This seems to be controlled by a man called "Nine". Prisoners pay a "tribute" to Nine of 25% of their daily food.

XP and Levelling
XP may be given out ad-hoc and/or at the end of a session. In all cases no character may "level up" mid-session. Time will be allotted at the beginning or end of each session to sort out level-ups. This prevents levelling up from disrupting the flow of the game.

Well I enjoyed the first Big Meet of the Year (The half I saw of it anyway - Sorry I missed Laurent and Josh... not that sorry obviously, but you know, a bit sorry. wink).

Interesting prisonerified idea. Intrigued to see where it is going. Obviously the party will eventually replace this 'Nine' as the kings of prisoner-world, but the big question is - just exactly how much tribute should they demand when they are in charge!?

Also, that's not the first time I've ended up taking over Laurent's character... neutral Hopefully he don't mind none. Not sure if I ought to sort meself out a character or just rely on stealing any that get abandoned by people leaving early!

Hopefully Demon-Web hasn't been thrown to the Planeside (See what I did there?wink), but looking forward to cracking this country of convicts! Cha-ching! £££

I'm sure, if we're organised, we can do both and more! The sky is the limit! ... unless you're playing Demon-Webs, in which case you have a myriad of skies to choose from... or if you're imprisoned on an anti-magicaled Island; then you have pretty severe limits... but still; my point is valid. confused

See ya'all in Feb!

I've created a "lost and found" thread in the members only forum, would attendees of the January big meet please spare a minute or two to go and take a look at it if you have not already done so.

I should also be at the next big meet - though being just after conception I might still be a little weary. I'm likely to be joined by Lucee and possibly a new guy too.

I've got a real gaming craving on me at present so I might put some real effort into bringing a non dnd rpg with me to sate my needs. Time will tell.

Charlie,

So you picked-up Bimble the Halfling fighter?
He is a bit hard of hearing and not that stealthy with his armour. Although I played him without much AC as we were all prisoners, so technically he could be a bit more silent. His hearing would not improve, armour or no armour, though.

I had him charge a Minotaur, fail miserably, then left the room! twisted
Glad he survived.

Laurent,

Edit: I have changed 2012 to 2013 in the thread and events related to the next Big Meet.

I might pop out of self-imposed exile for this one.

Are we nearly there yet?

You bet we are.

Just 2 days.

Its today! Its today!

Its like waking up to Christmas, but without the jolly man with the big white beard... Wait a minute...

Many thanks for the warm welcome and the chance to see what big people get up to when exploring multiverses .... Although I was responsible for the delayed start, appreciate the patience folks, and didn't get in more than one chop with an awsome war axe, I now remember what I've missed for the last 35 years. I'll definitely be there for the next one whatever game is being played.

Nice to meet you on Saturday, and good to see everybody. Hope to see you all again next month.

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

It is always nice to have a new face at the big meet and see someone getting into / back into gaming - glad you'll be coming back.

Hopefully we'll soon see a conclusion to the demon web - only one chapter left so we should be able to blitz that in about half an hour twisted. Its been jolly good fun but once it is concluded we might genuinely be able to have two small games running at the big meet instead of one massive one which would be pretty sweet. We'll see how the numbers work out in the coming months though...

Dear Big Meet attendees,

Glad to read that it was a success and that new members were entertained.

I have set-up the events and forum thread for the March edition of the Big Meet. I have not touched any "default games" for a while, see The Afternoon Session page; so if they are no longer played, please drop a line on the March 2013 Big Meet thread.

Of course, if people want to propose new games, they are invited to post away about them and events can be entered in the appropriate game session.

Laurent,
