Monthly Boardgames in Leicester coming back

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

Yes thats right, back. For those who have been around long enough to remember I used to organise a monthly board and card game event in Leicester (technically Aylestone) Called Board and Card Games Galore!!!!!!!!!!!! - not named by me might I add mrgreen. Anyway it died off in my unfortunate absence. But now I'm back so I'm going to re-instate it. I've not yet talked about it in detail with the venue but I did pop in a while back and ask and in principle there is no problem there. I intend to drop in on them soon and discuss it in a more concrete fashion i.e. actually book some space.

Historically the event was on the 4th Saturday each months - 2 weeks after The Big Meet but I'm thinking about changing that to a Sunday instead. It depends a bit on whether the Venue has free space for us then or not but in principle I think the idea is good. Last time attendance was very variable and not as high as I'd like to have seen and I think lazy Sunday afternoon games might go down better.

Which is why I'm posting this, I would like to hear from folks around here what they think. Whether they are familiar with the old event or not which works better for you, Saturday or Sunday. Or anything else for that matter - if you think it'd be better happening the week after the big meet, or the week before, happening elsewhere etc make it known. Right now I'm happy to have some options to consider. Not that I'll be able to please everyone but fresh input is good.

For more information take a look at the wiki page / faq:

Board and Card Games Galore

It will need some updating for sure but it gives a good overview of what sort of thing to expect from the event and how it worked before. In particular I'm aware the venue - The Black Horse now offers food which is potentially very helpful.

These days I've got even more games and even more desire to play them, so with any luck the first event will happen later this month, if not then it will happen in October for sure.

Its on, in October, on the 4th Sunday. Checkout the calendar entry here.

The Rules

We get the Venue for free, so long as we partake of the food and drinks served at the venue. This means no bringing your own. Which if their delivered food lives up to the menu will be no trauma at all. The drinks were always good and still are.

Apart from that it is business as it always used to be. I'll try and update the FAQ linked above to reflect the changes and make it a bit more navigable in the coming days and get an a wiki page up for the event so there are specific details available.

It would have happened this month but that whole weekend the Black Horse is having a big beer festival type thing. So I might be there anyway, especially if anyone fancied keeping me company....

Good to hear the Card and board games is back on Alan. I know it's your little pet, but I enjoy it too. Sorry I didn't reply earlier, but things have been a little difficult of late.

Hopefully it will take off a bit more than last time, I'd love to consistently see enough people showing up to have 2 or three games on the go at once. But we shall see how that goes. I'll do what I can to spread the word and coerce folks into showing up and having some fun but it might yet prove to be an event not really for this group at this time. I'll let it run for the October/November/January events and re-evaluate then. Ta for the support chap, I hope to see you there.

I think I and my Munchkin/Dr. Lucky/various-Cheapass-Games addicted other half will put in an appearance for this when it goes ahead.

Heh, yeah I can see this being all sorts of fun. Sundays are no good for Celine but Clare may be interested. And I may be able to drag Dave along. :-D

  • has a small pout in the corner as is in Derby and waaaaaay too broke to get to Lei* :P

Have fun though!

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Well, I already play board games a few hundred yards away on one Sunday evening, and the other is now vacant. So I'm in.

Len

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

Hopefully your fortunes will change and you'll be able to come visiting. That or some other soul from Derby will be tempted to come play and won't mind providing a lift.

I am rather looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I'll be there if they do, Mr Alan. :-D

Having sampled the food at the black horse, I think everyone is going to be quite happy - the burger was tops and very filling. Big burger with a couple of onion rings stacked ontop of it and said onion rings filled with cheese and bbq sauce, a side of chips andcoleslaw for the princely sum of £5.15 (they give £1 off burgers on Saturday, normally it would have been £6.15). So perhaps not quite as cheap as the Brunswick but on par with. So just 3 weeks now until the return of this event. I'm looking forward to it already. biggrin

skerrigan posts: 142 United Kingdom

Alan, your brave sacrifice of taking a burger for the team will not be in vain.

Mik posts: 48 United Kingdom

According to some of my players the "pint of chips" is quite good too, and I can vouch for the BLT.wink

Thanks for the feedback on the rest of the menu - good to know. Now time for a shameless reminder - this event is on and shall be happening a week today (making it the 23rd of October). Come along, sample the food and drinks of the establishment and the company and games of the rest of the attendees. Should be good times all round.

Be there or be one of those boring square things that doesn't have pips/numbers/icons adorning your sides!

Sunday menu tested.

You can't get better than a "Sunday Roast" eaten in the company of friends, followed by some Board and Card gaming with those same friends.

Alan and I took the Roast Beef for a test, and it passed with flying colours.

So the October event was a wash out, only Len and myself showed. I had maybes from something like a dozen people and none showed up. I'll give it another shot in November but if there is no demand, there is no need for the event and I'll call it quits.

Len posts: 1095 United Kingdom

Hmm. I thought I'd posted this, but obviously one of the times I hit the "fail" button instead of the Post button.
The Sunday Roast was great, and we know perfectly well that a once-off lack of turnout is no real indication of lack of interest. Sometimes all those who would like to find there are other, more pressing demands on their time.
I know its disappointing that none but us turned out, but lets give it some time. It was a relative success before you had to leave the country. It could grow quite nicely given time.

Len

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

Another shameless reminder, the next one is only a week away on Sunday the 27th November. Last time only 2 people showed up - which given the dozen or so "maybes" I had was a disappointment to say the least. If there isn't a stronger turnout this time it'll probably be the last one - I know a weak showing once is hardly indicative but two in a row would be close enough for me. It'd be a bit sad but I'm getting a regular board game fix elsewhere so I'll cope if that happens.

Hopefully see you there!

skerrigan posts: 142 United Kingdom

Did this event go ok? As a potential future shower-upper when I'm not otherwise engaged I hope you got enough people to do another one.

Alan posts: 321 United Kingdom

it basically fell flat again, I don't know what I'll do yet but for sure the December one won't be happening. Might try again in January, perhaps switch it to the 4th Saturday instead and see if that draws more people. But the 4th Saturday in January I'm away...

At this point it is fairly likely to just get binned though.

Laurent posts: 1029 United Kingdom

Alan,

Sorry to hear about that.

Our sort-of-weekly board-game event at Vague Connections in Nottingham, allegedly interspersed every now and then with a session of "an RPG game-system we never play but let's have a go at it" attracts three to four regulars plus the odd "non-core" player.

To be fair we cheat in the sense that it is mainly our two regular RPG gaming groups that masquerade as the Monday board-game group.

Although our thread seems to only feature my humble self; I guess it gets read by curious members. What we usually do is decide what game we will be playing the next session. Certainty may attract customers.

Of course, it could all be down to my personal charm! mrgreen

Laurent,
