Miniatures/Models & Carry Cases

I was wondering if you guys knew of any good places, preferbabley "local" i.e not from across the Atlantic, to get characterful models from to represent characters for games like DnD and such.

I use Miniature Heroes to get Reaper Miniature models and avoid paying through the nose at customs like I've done before. Use the Reaper Miniature's Figure Finder to locate the kind of model you want, then search the name at Miniature Heroes.

I've also found an European site called Fenryll which sells an interesting selection of its own miniatures, including a "Three Stage Evolution" line which is sets of three models, each the same character but each a higher tier of "awesome" above the other.

Any suggestions or tips to share? Also, recommendations on small miniature characters would be nice.

As Len says spirit games do indeed carry a mighty selection of minis.

Other places to look at:

Some companies:
http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/ - small wise they have some 'children', a range halfings that are perhaps less fantasy than you are looking for, and some sci fi dwarves and a fair range of fantasy dwarves too.
http://www.heresyminiatures.com/ - small wise Andy does some cracking halflings.
http://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/index.php
http://wargamesfoundry.com/

Some online stores, if you take the time to through the different ranges these two alone sell you'll find an alarming number of pretty minis:
http://www.artemisblacks.com/
http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/

More of a gallery site but there are lots of cool minis there usually including info on who makes them:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/

In general if you can find them the old metal miniatures from the wargame Confrontation had a heap of cool and characterful stuff. Probably should also mention games workshop. And the dnd miniatures games. But Reaper is an excellent start for dnd style character minis - their figure finder in particular is most useful. Usually shortly after I find ebay to pretty handy too.

Less local:
http://www.megaminis.com/ Lots of variety, sculpts in my limited experience while not great are not as bad as they look online.

That should keep you busy a while lol - hope you find something helpful in there.

I love the stuff I've had from Heresy Miniatures and although it's mail order only it's nice to know you're supporting a local company.

I also like the look of the stuff at http://www.otherworld.me.uk/ Lots of 'Old School' monsters but I've not got around to ordering any yet.

A load of brilliant links guys. But do any of you have experience with satchels to carry rule books and miniatures around in? I can see that Spirit Games carries Charon's Satchel Case which holds enough miniatures, but could it hold a Pathfinder's Player's Guide, Advanced Player's Guide and the Ultimate Magic books, as well as a sheet of miniatures?

I've got a few foam sheets from an old Games Workshop box, so I could always buy the aptly named Bag of Holding from ThinkGeek.

Not by any means cheap options, though to be fair not outrageous either heres the different cases I'm aware of:

I don't know how large those rulebooks are and I've no direct experience with them but the KR cases and bags are pretty versatile:

The backpacks, klite and aquilla might be your best bets. Though just getting a "kaiser two" and only putting in one carry case and filling the rest with books might work too. You might also have some luck with substituting a layer of rulebooks with a layer of foam in one of the carry cases.

I quite like the look of the felherr cases too but I've not seen them in the flesh:

I suspect if you can find an email address/contact page for the manufacturers they'd be quite happy to discuss dimensions.

I have several "people carriers" that were not initially made for the job. One is a Black & Decker tools box for carrying small parts and fixings. It has four different sized inserts with several of each size making up a single layer the size of a briefcase. I also have several smaller versions by other makers down to an A4 sized one that is most convenient. I line them either with sheet cork or foam, and they make perfect mini-cases.

I was also introduced to the Really Useful Box concept. (Seriously, search Google for Really Useful Box and you will see what I mean. Local stationers stock them.)

Jim,

I have the Charon case and you're welcome to take a look on Saturday or any other meet. It's a nice solution to carrying everything in one bag but of course there is always a compromise when travelling light!

With the mini carrier in place (which is ok but the figures tend to move around a little) you'll easily get one or two hard back PHB size rule books and some other assorted 'stuff' in the case without over filling it but more than a couple of books and it's a bit of a squeeze. I tend to carry the minis, small dice bag, pencil case, a book or two and some character sheets.

Cheers,

Bruce

I second Len's vote for adapting a tool box. £4.50ish from Wilkinsons plus some packaging foam and you're a happy camper... with money left over for a pint razz
