Looking to form new group of 6 - 8 players

Hi

I am looking for anyone interested in forming a new group of about 6 - 8 players, to play on Sundays in Nottingham, say afternoon 1pm - 5pm or 6pm in Nottingham.

Would be to play games like D&D, Merps, AD&D, Star Trek, Superhero roleplaying games, well actually most roleplaying games i guess, the group i used to play stopped playing so would like to form a new group if anyone interested.
Would be great to get players who would like to play and GM, regardless of experience.

Could be weekly or fortnightly, anyone interested let me know.
Cheers
Mike the Ninja

Hey Mike,

Not a nottingham player, but if you dont get a regular group straight away, try heading to either vague connections or mondo comico where lots of our group play on and off.

Hang in there.biggrin
This is the time of year that students start at universities. I'm not trying to say all roleplayers are students, but enough are that when the new uni students get their feet under the table, some of them may come looking for a little something on that table top that involves dice and pretending to be something you are not.

OK, so pizza and beer also feature quite often, but you know what I mean.

We recently had two bites all the way from Canada in the Short Armagada game. cool I'm not going to claim we attract players from all over the world all the time, but we do sometimes, and always have done. New terms are a rich seam to be mined for XP GP RPG, I mean PCs.

Is there no players out there interested?

try adding some details, like if you are willing to gm at least to start with post a proposal for the game. Also if you haven't done so already shoot the gm of any games you could turn up to a message and see if they mind you coming down to the session to say hi. A lot of folks don't check the forum often and / or are less inclined to engage with a total stranger so meeting some of the local gamers face to face even briefly can be a big help in finding out who and what is going on in and around the area and to garner responses from the folk who will then know the person behind the account.

Sad to say but getting a new game going takes some effort usually, one lonely post isn't going to cut it 9 times out of 10.

Mike,

I was about to say the same as Alan, so I will say it via a personal example.

I joined the group around June last year, went to the Big Meet and decided to run a 3.5 (it is now Pathfinder RPG) campaign "Rise of the Runelords".
I talked about it, but being the new guy around I guess it did not help.
Around July/August I posted a similar message as yours on a thread.
Like you I just did not understand the lack of replies. People read it all right (you can check the counter), but not a single reply.
At the time I had no place to run the game and no player for my game.

Then Toby, an Assistant Organiser for Nottingham, at the time he had time to spare and is sadly not as "game active" as he would like now, told me the same thing as Alan told you: "Put a game on the calendar, people will come to you".

Toby was right, I dropped by "Vague Connections" around October last year, which had just opened at the time, asked if I could get a table should I found enough people to join, then I had Toby post my game event at a tentative date three weeks away (to give people time to spot the game).
Personal messages started to show-up in my inbox, I started a game-thread, the game started. The rest is history.

There seem to be a threshold of interest under which people, even those who are looking for a game, will not contact the potential GM. Members tend to be shy when it comes to be the "first ones", however they would gladly ask to join an existing game. Over the past year, some of my players have had changes in their life that prohibited them to carry on with the Wednesday game, I have had to look for replacements every now and then. I usually fill the spots within days (even hours!) of opening a recruitment thread.

So my advice is the same as I was given before:

  • Pick a game system.
  • Decide on an adventure.
  • Find a place to play.
  • Post a game event (or have a GM or Admin post one for you). Alternatively or concurrently drop by the local game shop (Vague Connections, Mondo Comico, Chimera) and leave a leaflet there.
  • ... then wait for the fish to catch the bait.

Groups are usually formed by a GM looking for players. Logic dictates that some basic of social glue is needed to create a group out of thin air, a group from which one member would say "Ok, I'll run the game" for instance. As Alan pointed out, the likelihood of that happening is pretty poor.

As for the location, you should choose a public space, game shop or pub, before inviting people to your place if you had that in mind. I have yet to meet a weird individual, but whoever joins will be a total stranger to you at first.

Hope that helps.

I have today informed two individuals that aren't members of the group to check out Mondo on a Sunday (for Encounters or your game) and mentioned this site as well because they were saying they missed playing the 4e game we had going a little while ago. I believe Marie and Matt may both be interested as well if you have their addresses or want to post them a note on the old Obsidian Portal game.

Cheers guys appreciate all the suggestions, Glenn could you email me Marie and matt contacts, lost my link to obisdian portal.

Mike,

I forgot the negative part: At times you can propose something and nobody will be interested. It happens. sad It may hurt, but always try again.

I never got to run "Shore to the Sea" for instance. Less recently, in fact a long time ago, I proposed to run a "Castle and Crusades" game, no taker.

Safe bet to start a gaming group is to start with standard game systems, then strong-arm them with what you want to play. This is a bit devious, but there are usually more players than GMs.smile

Laurent,
