Piers
Piers de Gracy
''Piers has reluctantly joined up with the party after a chance meeting outside the city walls of Platen with a snooty Elf, a smelly half-ogre, a perky gnome bard with a huge name (but at least good manners) and a rather impressive individual....
He has found himself recruited into something called 'the resistance'..... The rest of the night passed in a blur of
strange meetings, flying ogres, and exploding alchemist fire......
Piers went to bed with a headache and a sense of foreboding.....''
Piers de Gracey : Human Sorcerer
4th son of Marcus de Gracey, of the House of de Gracey.
Background:
The House of de Gracey is a large trading firm/family based in Pria Blanca. At a young age Piers was tutored by an elderly wizard in the service of the family in the attempt to 'make something useful of him' as his father put it. Piers showed both an innate grasp of spell casting and a stubborn lazy streak from his earliest days, happy to learn any spell that had an impressive or destructive effect, but preferring to spend the rest of his time making life a misery for his servants and slumming it in the taverns and alehouses of the city.
Manner/Morals
Piers comes across on 1st (and 116th) meeting as a brash young nobleman with more cash than sense... and it's a fairly accurate impression. However, the de Gracey family although rich as traders are seen as very much 'middle class' by the rest of high society, so young Piers prefers to spend his time amongst the lower classes of society where his assumed manners and the odd flashy magic trick impress those around him into believing him to be a young man of style, nobility and class.... and where people are less likely to be able to tell the difference between an act and a true nobleman.
Mission:
Rumour has reached the ears of the de Gracey family of a party sent out from Pria Blanca. The members of this party stand out to the extent (a half-ogre mage and a pyromaniac thief have been mentioned) that the family feel that something major must be happening... and they want to know how the venture can be turned into a quick profit. The Family see the venture as high risk/high gain and so have sent young Piers in the hope that the journey and investigation will make something of him... and if it's a corpse then at least they are free of his clothing bills
Motivation:
Piers wants to get the journey over and done with as quickly as possible so he can get away from smelling of horse all day and back to places where they have heard of the word 'bath'. His father has made it clear that should he come home without some useful information his funds will be cut off and the thought of having to earn his keep in a clerk's office just sounds so... degrading.
Piers will do his upmost to stop his hands from having to get dirty, and will do as little work as possible while aiding the party in their quest, only using the strongest spells he has learnt in situations where his own skin is in danger.
He is likely to get agitated and whiney if he feels that the party are risking his life and/or are leading him into a situation that will involve mud.
Piers is also something of a magpie, on the lookout for anything shiny looking that he thinks will make him look more impressive and add to his stature in society. A gold reward is unlikely to tempt him into rash deeds but the promise of something that will increase his standing (even if only in his own mind) may tempt him into rash deeds as he attempts to live up to his self image of a dashing young nobleman.
