Bandaluthia Session 41

Table of contents As the animals tried to sleep after the terrible incident with the Night Hag, the two guards, Dreizach and Tyler, awoke them yet again to fend off attack from a dozen or so skeletons. This proved to be a mere irritation, as the skeletons were soon dispatched. Some three hours later the sun broke the horizon and the fearful night had passed. The Animals and Rubins went down from the top of the Temple to the Altar where they all lay upon the stone slab to absorb the suns healing rays channelled down from the crystal ball. By midday, the Animals had discussed their options, and although a few of the Animals had just wanted to go home, they were swayed by Rubins’ will to learn more from the Temple.

Back they travelled, to the chamber with the broken floor. The floor had fallen and had broken into four pieces. On each piece lay a sarcophagus. The Animals investigated the under side of the floor they stood upon. It seemed to be held up by stalactites meeting stalagmites. Under the floor was water, which was as clear as you would expect from spring. The depth was ankle deep where the floor had fallen, but it rapidly got deeper and went further than anyone could see. They animals had come for treasure. There were four dead bodies that they could see. They had possibly been present when the floor fell through, as they seemed to be under the stone. Dreizach, they Animal most keen to be a treasure hunter, jumped down to the broken floor, which swayed under his weight. The floor sections were balancing atop a large boulder, which also was the cause of the floor actually breaking into four as it fell.

Negri and Tyler also joined Dreizach and the three Animals looted the corpses. Rubins had aspirations to see what was in the sarcophagi, and he cast Gaseous form and visited the four marble death vessels. Inside one, lay a foul creature, but it had the item Rubins longed for. The Amulet of The Second Plane of Hell, Dis. Rubins did not startle the Animals by telling them of the creature within, but suggested that if they worked together, they could defeat the beast. So, the Animals opened the casket.

As soon as the sarcophagus opened, a petrifying aura omitted from within. Although none of the Animals ran away frightened, Canvell, Lupa’s brother did. The aura cast serious doubts into their minds, but they held their ground. Rubins let loose a lightning bolt. They rest of the Animals awaited. From across the other side of the room, a Demi-Lich appeared. Its terrible look cast more fear and doubts, but the Animals again held fast. Dreizach ran around to attack, Tyler followed suit. Lupa too ran, as Coolio tried to reach it clutching Betsy with sweaty palms. As Dreizach swung his sword, he dropped it. The fear of this terrible monster was surely the cause. Tyler swung and missed, but before Lupa or Coolio had got near, Rubins cast Scorching ray, which destroyed the undead forever.

As sighs of relief echoed with each other, matters took a turn for the worse. The Amulet of Dis had been magically sealed from detection for centuries, was now attracting its masters will. Deep from the Second Plane of Hell, the Arch Duke Dispater sent forth an emissary to bring his Amulet back. A horned devil appeared in the dust of the Demi-Lich and picked up the Amulet. Coolio reacted first, and cast Betsy to one side; he then called a Celestial owl to retrieve the Amulet. The owl grabbed the gold necklace but could not break the grip of the devil. As more panic ensued Negri cast Spectral Hand and tried to deliver some necromantic magic to harm the horned devil. Dreizach used his ‘Luck blade’ to great effect and it jumped back into his hand, but he could not hit the beast. Rubins pumped magic missiles into the devil with little effect, but Tyler aimed her death delivering scimitars at the Infernal beings arm which held the Amulet. Success! She cut right through the arm at the third time of asking. The Owl flew to Coolio with Amulet and hand. Rubins cast more spells as did Negri, and the Devil disappeared. Coolio then created holy water, and they hid the Amulet from Hells eyes.

The escape from the Temple was rapid. The Animals jumped into the guano filled stagnant water surrounding the monument and swam. As they emerged into the jungle, Rubins played his final trump card. Teleportation. The Animals found themselves just three miles from Bandaluthia. Never did the City look so inviting, even to Lupa who is not a city dweller.
