Bandaluthia Session 40

Table of contents Investigating the chamber from where their enemy had come, the Animals discovered a secret door. Following a passage hidden behind it for some way the group saw light – literally not metaphorically – at the end of the tunnel. After some sneaking from their Wayward Warden, they party stole into a pillared room which had a sunk portion in the middle. There were double doors to the left and right. The Animals explored the room and found the sunken portion contained four sarcophagi. There were bodies littered on the ground, variously decayed and chewed.

Dreizack and Tyler gripped a rope either side and lowered Brother Coelho into the pit. Grabbing some items (a couple of daggers, some gold and a pair of boots) they brought him back up. Sensing danger the group left, focussing on their goal of resurrecting Rubins Luka. They left by the double-doors to the right and exited the bottom level of the temple. Upward, they decided, and climbed the deep stairs to the top of the temple. In a space screened by pillars they discovered the source of the Temple’s power. A large multi-faceted crystal channelled the Sun’s energy, via a crystal rod, to the floor below. Lupa was now animated. They must descend and resurrect her mentor. So they did, but found the door to the floor below sealed against them. Using acid the Animals corroded the hinges on the door and removed it, placing it to one side. A stone block – the alter – stood before them. Lupa took out the small wrapping containing Rubins Luka and placed it on the holy surface. The wrapping expanded revealing a coffin of man size. Nothing further happened. The party went forward and sought to remove the wizard from his coffin. In so doing they found their own wounds, when exposed to the radiant rays, were healed. Sensing patience was they key they sat, with Rubins on the alter, and waited.

The hours passed and the party began to reflect that, perhaps, their journey had been in vane. Then, a faint cough. Rubins’s chest began to rise-and-fall, slowly at first and then with the vigour you would expect were someone just sleeping. Then he awoke, groggy and disequilibriated. ‘Where are we?’ After explaining where they were, with growing urgency, he said they must be gone. ‘Just as the radiance of the Sun gives good power to this alter, so, by moonlight, it radiates pure evil’.

The party left and resolved to ascend and camp for the night. In an attempt to stay any evil they covered the crystal atop the Temple with a cloak, hoping to deny the power of the moonlight to the alter below. Tyler and Dreizack set guard, and the rest began to sleep. After a couple of hours movement in the night-sky caught the attention of the watch. They awoke the rest. The inky-black wings closed – bats, and big ones. Swords were drawn, spells prepared. The enemies closed, and landed, transforming into undead humanoids with fangs. Vampires. The party struck, but with limited success. There were perhaps thirty enemies. One-by-one the party were dragged to the floor, and their throats ripped from their pulsing necks. The end, or so it seemed.

‘Wake-up’. Brother Coelho was puzzled. ‘Wake-up’, Brother Vincensa urged once more. Sneaking an eyelid open, Brother Coelho was surprise to find he lived still. Atop the pyramid an evil-seeming women stood, with bedraggled hair and a dirty, unkempt visage. She stole among the Animals, pawing at them. An explosion erupted: Betsy struck, and what a strike. The explosive bolt ripped into the hag, rocking her backwards. Grabbing their weapons and casting whatever spell they could, the party began to fight. Betsy rang once more, the fighters grabbed weapons and sought to cleave at the evil creature. As she neared death her appearance changed, and she began to shimmer. Just in time Lupa struck, before she faded from this plane, scratching and catching the throat of the hag. So she fell, and a ruby rolled from the pile of rags and filth on the ground.

The party endured. The crystal was covered once more. Thoughts turned to home, and the watch resumed.
